2021 White Sox Wins Over/Under

  • Over 90.5 wins (-110)
  • Under 90.5 wins (-110)

The Chicago White Sox have been steadily accruing talent over the last several years and were one of few teams this offseason to make big splashes in the trade and free-agent markets. They have solidified themselves as one of the teams to beat in 2021, after finishing the 2020 season with a record of 35-25. They were a game behind the division-leading Twins and had the same record as Cleveland.

Arguably, Chicago has improved more than both of those teams, and should not only contend for their division title, but for the World Series title as well. 2021 was Chicago’s last winning season since 2008, which was also the last time they finished first in their division. They have not had 90 or more wins since 2006, but this could be the season where they surpass that number.

The White Sox decided to allow catcher James McCann to explore free agency. He signed a big deal with the New York Mets. Closer Alex Colome also departed via free agency, though his replacement, Liam Hendriks, might be the best closer in baseball. Nomar Mazara only spent last season with Chicago and left to sign with Detroit.

Chicago more than made up for these losses with major signings and trades during the offseason. The White Sox brought back right fielder Adam Eaton to complete the outfield. Eaton spent the last four seasons with the Washington Nationals, but his three seasons prior to that were with Chicago. His career .280 average, plus the ability to hit for double-digit home runs and run for double-digit steals makes him a superb addition to the White Sox. He is also an excellent “clubhouse guy,” and the tenacity he brings to the team is something that statistics cannot measure. They also signed closer Liam Hendriks in the offseason, making their bullpen one of the deepest in baseball. Hendriks has been arguably the best closer in the sport the last two years.

In December, Chicago sent two prospects, including pitcher Dane Dunning, to Texas for pitcher Lance Lynn. Lynn is a workhorse pitcher. He is an innings eater – he has made fewer than 33 starts only three times in the seven full seasons he has played – and will help young pitchers like Lucas Giolito and Dylan Cease develop.

From top to bottom, the White Sox have an excellent pitching staff. The rotation is headlined by young ace Giolito. He could be in the Cy Young conversation this year. Cease has shown promise but will need to limit walks to improve. In addition to Lynn, Chicago also has Dallas Keuchel back in the rotation. He impressed in 2020 with a 1.99 ERA in 63 1/3 innings. In the bullpen, Aaron Bummer, Garrett Crochet and Jace Fry will help set up Hendriks. Bummer has improved in each of his four seasons, Crochet is going into his second year and has a 100 MPH fastball and a nasty changeup and Fry has a wipeout slider that has helped him induce strikeouts.

The lineup is extremely balanced in terms of power and speed, although they could have one of the highest strikeout rates for a team, much like the Astros pre-trashcan. MVP first baseman Jose Abreu brings a lot of pop, while second baseman Nick Madrigal is all speed. Yoan Moncada, Tim Anderson, Eloy Jiminez and Luis Robert all bring a power/speed combo that many teams would covet, and help make this lineup one of the best in baseball this season.

Several of Chicago’s top prospects could see time in the majors this season. Andrew Vaughn is doing his best to make the team out of Spring Training. He could be a designated hitter, or give Abreu breaks at first base. Pitcher Michael Kopech, who has dealt with injuries the last several years, could make the team as a reliever, but could also start games.

2021 White Sox Win Total Wager: Over 90.5 wins (-110)

Chicago has a loaded lineup and a deep pitching staff, and although Minnesota and Cleveland both remain competitive in the AL Central, the White Sox are the team to beat. Take the over and enjoy watching Chicago win their division, and perhaps the World Series too.
