Netherlands vs USA World Cup Predictions

Last Updated: Dec 3, 2022

The Netherlands will take on Team USA on Saturday, Dec. 3, at Khalifa International Stadium in Doha, Qatar as the first match in the Round of 16 at the World Cup.

The Dutch will look to make at least the semi-finals for the third World Cup in a row, while the United States looks to move past the Round of 16 for the first time in their last two appearances.

Neither team has looked dominant thus far during the tournament. However, neither team has yet to lose following the group stage.

A potential meeting with Lionel Messi and Argentina awaits the winner of this showdown, so the time is now for each nation to find its top form.

Let’s take a look at current betting odds to find best bets and make a match prediction for the Netherlands vs the United States.

Netherlands vs USA Odds

  • 3-way handicap: Netherlands (-106) | Draw (+230) | USA (+310)
  • Draw No Bet: Netherlands (-240) | USA (+180)
  • Both Teams To Score: Yes (+105) | No (-135)
  • Over/Under Goals: Over 2.5 (+135) | Under 2.5 (-175)

Netherlands vs USA odds are current as of Dec. 2, on Caesars Sportsbook.

The Dutch are a considerable favorite heading into the match, with a strong lean toward this being a low-scoring affair. That said, if looking to invest in the USMNT, the odds are quite favorable.

Netherlands vs USA Prediction

Netherlands 1-1 USA (USA Wins on Penalties)

The Netherlands are the No. 8-ranked team in the world and should be considered the heavy favorites in this matchup. However, Gregg Berhalter‘s USA squad was been able to execute exceptional tactics during the group stage and could prove to be a handful for Louis van Gaal.

If the United States can find the back of the net, I expect a strong defensive effort from their back line to hold the Dutch in the second half. The only issue with this prediction will be the health of Christian Pulisic (abdominal injury) and Josh Sargent (ankle).

If the USMNT are to pull an upset, they will need to be at full strength. Luckily, the latest reports suggest that Pulisic will be a full go for the match.

On the other hand, it is unclear how complete the Netherlands squad will be regarding the fitness of Memphis Depay. The star striker missed the opening match in the group stage before coming off the bench for the second and finishing with 60 minutes versus Qatar. However, Cody Gakpo has stepped up, scoring in each of the Netherlands group-stage matches.

It should also be noted that the Netherlands team have been dealing with a flu outbreak. This will be important to monitor heading into match time.

The Dutch are clearly the more talented team, but have yet to fully click at the World Cup. This could create an opening for Team USA, who arguably have yet to field their strongest starting XI, with Brenden Aaronson and Gio Reyna coming off the bench during the group stage.

The USMNT performed admirably against England, the No. 5-ranked team in the world, so it would be a mistake to discount their chances in the Round of 16.

I am predicting an upset where each team cancels the other out during regulation play, with the United States winning on penalties.

Netherlands vs USA Betting Tips

  • The Netherlands has yet to lose a match since the hiring of Van Gaal in August of 2021 (13-0-5).
  • Team USA have lost each of their previous two matches in the Round of 16 in extra time.
  • The USMNT have not defeated a European nation in 11 straight matches.

Netherlands vs USA Best Bets

Netherlands or Tie and Under 2.5 Goals (-110) at BetMGM Sportsbook

WAGER: 1 Unit

This may seem like a bit of backtracking, but the Dutch are heavily favored for a reason. This wager covers my prediction for a low-scoring tie while also providing a cushion in the event the Netherlands find their groove.

If looking for further prop bets, I would not shy away from a Gakpo “Anytime" goal at +188.
