Dynasty TE Fantasy Football Rankings: Breakdown
Of the four positions listed, tight end sees the least amount of change from year to year in rankings. The biggest reason why is that there aren’t many elite receiving options at tight end. Every once in a while, a new face will enter the conversation, but it isn’t a position with a ton of turnover.
Travis Kelce, Darren Waller and George Kittle remain elite options at TE, with each player at a different stage in their respective career. Kelce continues to be the most reliable option of the bunch, but he is the oldest as he will turn 32 during the 2021 season. Paired with Mahomes, it’s reasonable to assume he will continue churning out 1,000-yard seasons for the next few years, at least.
Waller (28) and Kittle (27) aren’t far behind, as both are the No. 1 passing option in their respective offenses. Neither have the touchdown upside of Kelce, but both are more dynamic after the catch and are younger options.
But for the first time in several seasons, there is a new TE1 in dynasty football.
That is none other than Kyle Pitts, who the Falcons selected at No. 4 in the 2021 NFL Draft. There has never been a tight end selected that high in NFL history, simply because there has never been a prospect like him. He is the rare player who can win from the slot, inline or outside and is just 20 years old.
We know that it’s bold to rank a player at the top of their position before playing a down in the NFL, but Pitts is truly a generational player who is already one of the most valuable players in fantasy football.
Outside of the big four, there is a clear dropoff in talent at the tight end position. However, there are a few intriguing players who could make the jump into the elite tier in 2021. Those players include T.J. Hockenson, Mark Andrews and Dallas Goedert. All will need to see more volume this year, but they’ve consistently shown the ability to be difference-makers on Sunday.
From TE8 on, you won’t find much of a consensus among dynasty experts. All these players have their strengths but clear flaws that will prevent them from ever reaching premier status. Still, these players can have useful weeks, but figuring out when they can “hit" is anyone’s guess.
As a general rule and strategy, it’s wise to make tight end a priority early in your drafts, given the quick drop-off. But if you happen to miss out on the elite players, it may be wise to pass on this position until much, much later in your drafts.
