What Is Over/Under Betting on Caesars?

Over/Under betting is betting on the total number of points/runs/goals in a game or match. Caesars sets Over/Unders for every game in every sport around the world, meaning that you can bet on the totals of WNBA, Big3, KHL, MLS, EPL, Japanese baseball and more as well as for NFL games each week.

For an Over/Under bet to pay out, there would need to be over or under a certain number of predetermined points. In football, the Over/Under is typically set at 45 or higher — some totals could be as high as the 60s in college football. If there are fewer than the predetermined number then the under is successful.

For instance, if you’re betting on a game between the Chicago Bears and Detroit Lions, and the Over/Under is set at 47.5, there would need to be 47 points or fewer for the under to be successful. If there are 48 total points or more then the over would hit.

Typically, Over/Under odds are -110, or the standard for most wagers at sportsbooks. That means for a bettor to win $100 profit he/she would need to wager $110 and have the over or under hit.

How Do Caesars Totals Work?

Caesars, like most sportsbooks, sets competitive totals numbers for the market but also offers alternate totals at either longer or shorter odds depending on the number. For instance, in the Lions-Bears game referenced above, a bettor could bet over or under 47.5 at -110 odds, but Caesars may also offer -140 odds at 45.5 or -200 odds for 42.5. If a bettor is feeling daring, he/she could pick the alternate total to be higher, like 50.5, at +150 odds.

Because live betting has become so popular among patrons of online sportsbooks, the Over/Under totals are constantly fluctuating. This means that if you don’t like 47.5 as an Over/Under number, you can wait and hope it drops after the first 10 minutes and take the live over if it drops to 41.5.

Caesars Over/Under Rules

Over/Under rules at Caesars are comparable to other sportsbooks. Here’s a look at some:

  • Pushes: Some sports like hockey, football and baseball will set up even-number totals. A hockey total might be 6 for one game. A baseball total might be 8. A football total might be 44. If the total number of points is neither over or under that number then the bet pushes and is voided — meaning that bettors receive their initial stake back.
  • Teasers: Teasers for Over/Unders is allowed at Caesars, but there are typically fewer options for bettors to tease down totals with other sportsbooks. For instance, Caesars will give bettors a sliding scale of potential options for alternate totals but will not let a bettor choose his/her own alternate total.

Types of Caesars Totals

There’s a wide variety of totals bets that users can make on Caesars. For instance:

  • Point Totals: The most widely used Over/Under. As stated above, bet on there to be more or fewer than the number of points listed.
  • Player Props: Player props are almost universally set up as Over/Unders. If you think Jordan Poole will top 13.5 points, you can bet on his over in the Golden State Warriors upcoming game. If you believe Mike Trout will post two-or-more total bases, you can take his player prop too.
  • Futures. Do you think an NHL team will finish with over or under 93.5 regular-season points? Do you think an NBA team will finish with more or less than 46.5 wins. Bet on the over or under in those categories in most every sport.

Caesars NFL Totals

Because of its partnership with the NFL, Caesars has elite odds and betting markets for football gamblers. Here’s a look at some totals football bettors may want to consider during the season.

  • Player Props. Rushing yards, passing yards, receiving yards, fantasy points and much more. These are totals that bettors should take advantage of, either gambling on the over or under for each. If you think Josh Allen is poised to have a huge day, bet for him to go over his passing-yards prop and to go over 2.5 touchdown passes. If you think Dak Prescott will be stymied take his under in each category.
  • Points. As stated above, Over/Unders are most popular with point totals. Most NFL totals are about 48 points, since that is about the average number of points in a game. If you have a potentially high-scoring game it’ll be in the 50s. Take the over or under in it depending on how many points you believe there will be.
  • Win Totals. Do you think the Jacksonville Jaguars are poised to surprise this season? Bet on them to finish with more than 6.5 wins and take advantage of longer odds and a larger payout. Caesars has preseason odds for every team, and bettors can choose for them to finish with more or less than the total number of wins listed.
  • Teasers. Do you hate that the total listed in one of your preferred games is 46.5? Tease it down to 42.5 and take the over there — with less-lucrative odds.

Super Bowl

The Super Bowl is the, well, Super Bowl of sports-betting events, and there is no shortage of Over/Unders to bet on for that event. You can bet on the Over/Under length of the national anthem, bet just about every player prop imaginable — for nearly every skill-position player in the game — and much more.

With Caesars, betting on the big game is as easy as a few taps on your smartphone. Caesars has competitive odds and a vast array of Over/Unders come Super Bowl time.

Over/Under Bet Strategies

There are sound betting strategies for totals in all sports. Make sure to start by doing your homework. You definitely don’t want to be betting an over of 47.5 in a football game between two teams with anemic offenses. You don’t want to bet an over 8 in a baseball game with two ace starting pitchers going. You don’t want to bet an under when the Dodgers are at Coors Field.

Also be sure to shop around for the best odds/total number on different sportsbook options available to you. The Game Day has an odds tracker that provides not only the best number but the most lucrative odds for each over/under in each game each night. You’ll need funds in multiple online sportsbooks to shop for odds, but that is a smart strategy to have anyway.

The best strategy is to trust your gut and place bets you believe in. Try not to let someone sway you from what your gut says or you’ll end up losing twice.

But most importantly have fun and be responsible.

Over/Under Betting for Beginners

Betting Over/Unders as a beginner may seem daunting. But if you’re still feeling intimidated the best way to shake off the angst is by trying it out. Place a small wager on either an over or an under, depending on which game you choose and which outcome you prefer to bet, and monitor whether it is successful. If it is try it again and see what happens.

Trial and error is the best way to bet with a new sportsbook and also learn which is your preferred method of gambling and which is the sportsbook you want to keep playing with. It might cost you a few bucks in the beginning, but as long as you’re not betting your house there’ll be other opportunities to play more effectively and smartly.

How to Calculate Over/Under Odds?

Calculating odds in the United States is typically determining the amount as it pertains to a $100 bet. For instance, if an under is -115 in a football game that means a $115 bet will result in $100 profit, or a $100 bet will net $86.95 in profit. Typically if an over or under bet is -115, the other will be -105 (or $95.24 profit on a $100 bet).

If you’re betting an Over/Under in hockey, some odds will go as low as -140 or +115 depending on the goal total and the likelihood of the wager to pay out. But usually Over/Under odds are somewhere between +100 to -120 depending on the sport. A +100 bet is referred to as Even money, meaning you’ll double your stake if it hits.

The larger the payout, the less likely the bet is to hit, which means a -120 bet is slightly more likely to be successful than +100. A -115 bet is slightly more likely to be right than -105. A -110 bet is one that is essentially a coin flip.

Caesars odds for game totals is usually -110 but sometimes will post -115 for each side for in-game bets especially.

Why Are Over/Unders a Good Bet?

Over/Unders are a good bet in a marquee game where you’re unsure of the outcome. For instance, if the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills are playing, and you know there’ll be a lot of offense but are unsure which team will win, betting the over in total number of points is a great way to bet and win.

Betting unders becomes more effective during the playoffs where great defenses typically are on display. However, I usually prefer to bet overs, especially in games/matches where I don’t have a rooting interest, since it isn’t fun to root against offense.

Can Over/Unders Be a Bad Bet?

Yes, especially in sports like basketball where there is an insanely high pregame Over/Under number that can be done-in quickly. Betting on an Over/Under is a tricky proposition at times since points can either come in bunches or not at all, but it is also fun to bet them especially in games and matches where the outcome is uncertain.

What Sports Are Available for Over/Unders?

Just about every team sport where there are points scored. However, even individual sports like tennis have player props, like number of points won/lost or number of service breaks, that feature an Over/Under total.

Caesars features betting markets on almost every sport in the world, which makes it an exceptional option for pursuing Over/Under markets. Still, most individual sports will have fewer Over/Unders than team sports, and sports like soccer will typically offer fewer totals markets than other North American-based team sports.

Is There Bet Insurance on Over/Unders?

There can be. Caesars will periodically offer promotions like bet insurance and second-chance bets where totals are included in the qualifying wagers. It also will sometimes include parlay insurance if one leg hits, and Over/Unders are usually allowed as parlay options with Caesars.
