AL East Odds & Best Bets 2023

Last Updated: Aug 28, 2023

The American League East has been considered one of the best divisions in MLB for several seasons, though this year has thrown us all a curveball.

The Yankees are quite a ways out of a potential playoff spot, while the Orioles and Rays have two of the best records in baseball.

Let’s look at current betting odds to determine the best bet to win the 2023 AL East division.

AL East Best Bet 2023

Baltimore Orioles (-280)

DraftKings Sportsbook • 1 Unit

Anything above (-300) is a no-bet on the Orioles, so I would like to thank DraftKings for this line.

Losing Félix Bautista for what appears to be a season-ending UCL injury is a massive blow to the bullpen. Yennier Cáno is the closer going forward, but even he has been hittable after a sterling first half.

If the AL East is lost, it will be because of Baltimore’s pitching. However, I think they’ll be okay.

Prospect DL Hall replaces Bautista in the bullpen, and the three-headed attack of Cáno, Danny Coulombe, and Shintaro Fujinami is better than half of the league’s top three bullpen arms.

The offense is good and young, a combo that normally would fizzle out by now. Their 17.1 position player FanGraphs WAR is sixth in the AL, while their pitching (largely relief pitching) is fourth. That’s not a complete dig against the starting rotation, but it still lacks a top dog.

AL East Contenders 2023

Tampa Bay Rays (+250)

Caesars Sportsbook • WAGER: 0.25 Units

Tampa Bay has lost a starting rotations’ worth of innings this season and have done the best they can to piece together a staff.

That was the easier part of the equation. The Rays offense has fallen off, and their drop in walk rate paired with a rise in strikeout rate cost them more wins they they’d care to admit. The offense has plateaued (in a good) way the back half of August in time for a tough stretch of games.

Tampa plays two series against Toronto and Boston, and individual series against Miami, Seattle, and Baltimore. Those series against the Blue Jays are two of their final three series of 2023.

Either the Jays will be in position to jump the Rays in the Wild Card standings, or play spoiler.
