The Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers kick off their NFL preseason with a battle for the City Of Angels at SoFi Stadium on Saturday, Aug 13.

Each roster is packed with Pro Bowl talent, but in the first week of the preseason, you should not expect to see much from names like Matthew Stafford or Justin Herbert. Instead, we will look to the second string and those players in a position battle to determine best bets and predict the game’s outcome.

Rams vs Chargers Odds

According to our NFL odds, the Chargers are a 3.5-point favorite across the board. This makes sense since the Rams have little to no experience on the bench behind Stafford between John Wolford and Bryce Perkins.

Rams vs Chargers Implied Score

Chargers 16.75, Rams 13.25

The Over/Under is set at just 30 points with the expectation that each roster will field a team of below-average quality for a majority of the game.

Rams vs Chargers Matchup

Rams head coach Sean McVay has a long track record of resting his starters for much of the preseason. So naturally, this will lead to a stale group of talent on the field due to the Rams’ top-heavy roster construction.

We may see some interesting changes on offense under new offensive coordinator Liam Coen. However, the only real position battle on the Rams attack is at right guard between Coleman Shelton, Logan Bruss, and Tremayne Anchrum Jr.

Chargers head coach Brandon Staley is a former assistant for McVay and will also be unlikely to let his starters see the field much during the preseason.

You should expect to see a great deal of Chase Daniel at quarterback, with Easton Stick getting some work towards the end of the game. A player to watch on offense may be rookie running back Isaiah Spiller, currently in the lead to backup Pro Bowl star Austin Ekeler.

Between the two teams, the Chargers have a massive edge on the bench with several players with legitimate potential. This, combined with a significant advantage at quarterback, should lead to an easy Chargers victory in a low-scoring game.

Rams vs Chargers Prediction

Chargers 21, Rams 10

The Chargers have the advantage in almost every position in the battle of backups and should cruise to a smooth victory in their first preseason match.

In fact, the lack of depth on the Rams side may put the Under in jeopardy if the Chargers can adequately exploit the second and third-string defensive players.

Rams vs Chargers Bet Tips

“Quality Not Quantity" does not work in the preseason.

As mentioned above, the Rams have a very talented roster, but it is very top-heavy. Without the help of any of their regular starters, McVay’s squad will be helpless against a far superior Chargers bench.

Expect the battle of Los Angeles to be lopsided unless the Rams can generate some big plays or turnovers.

The Under may be a trap.

Betting the Under is standard practice during the preseason, especially early on. However, a total of 30 is relatively low, even for preseason standards. The Over/Under is currently the lowest listed game total on the books.

Points can come out of nowhere, and the lackluster Rams bench could quickly provide a defensive touchdown for the Chargers. Be careful of betting the Under on this battle of the backups.

Rams vs Chargers Best Bets

Chargers -3.5 (-110) at BetMGM Sportsbook

This NFL pick of the day should come as no surprise, as the Chargers are in a solid position to win this game by double-digits. Neither team cares about the outcome, but the players on the field certainly want to win. The Rams are simply going to have inferior talent on the field.
