The Drew Brees era is officially over for New Orleans, which means the Saints will have to find a new primary quarterback for the first time since 2005. While the team has two potential replacements already on the roster, both come with significant question marks.
Taysom Hill, who started four games in Brees’ absence last year, is a tight end who moonlights as a quarterback. Hill acquitted himself well in his brief cameo last year, but he’s more of a rusher than a passer. Jameis Winston, on the other hand, is a pure gunslinger, but he hardly played last season after his turnover-prone tenure with Tampa Bay. Accordingly, the Saints may utilize both depending on in-game situations.
Regardless of who takes over at quarterback, the Saints still possess one of the strongest rosters in football. Even with Brees in decline and forced to miss time due to injury, New Orleans won at least 12 games in each of the last three seasons. The Saints are exceptionally talented on both sides of the ball and have a terrific ground game spearheaded by Alvin Kamara.
The Saints should also benefit from a relatively easy schedule. While their division includes the reigning Super Bowl champs, it also features weaker teams in the Falcons and Panthers. If the Saints can take advantage of those winnable matchups, Sean Payton‘s squad should be headed for another successful season.

Looking at this roster, the Saints certainly appear capable of winning double-digit games for the fifth straight year, especially with an extra game on the schedule this year. The offense and defense both ranked fifth in points per game last year (most scored and fewest allowed), and there’s no reason to expect a significant drop-off on either front.
The offense shouldn’t suffer too much without Brees, and may actually improve if Michael Thomas stays healthy for the entire season. The defense has been an elite unit for several years now, and appears poised for continued success in 2021. All things considered, this is still a great football team that should have no problem winning 10-plus games with a fairly soft schedule.
