Michael Pineda is coming off one of his best starts of the season. It came against the Baltimore Orioles where he allowed just three hits and one run while striking out eight and walking two. Pineda isn’t known for high strikeouts but those came easy in his last start.
He’s now taking on the Orioles again, this time on the road, where he’s been slightly better overall. He’s only pitched in two games on the road this year but has a 2.61 ERA and has allowed just three earned runs in those two games.
The Orioles lineup has not been good recently. In the last 30 days, the Orioles are hitting .211 against righties with just 54 walks in 697 plate appearances. Pineda has struggled against righties as of late but it’s a small sample size of 25 batters, where he’s allowed a weighted on-base average of .363 and an isolated power number of .304.
Still, Pineda’s strikeout numbers are high and the Orioles projected lineup is combining to strikeout 25.3 percent of the time against righties in the last 30 days.
On the other hand, Bruce Zimmerman will get the start for the Orioles. The left-handed pitcher is 2-3 with a 5.15 ERA on the season. In April, he was worse against righties. In May, he was worse against lefties. In June, it’s anyone’s guess but that 5.15 ERA won’t cut it.
The Twins have a bunch of right-handed bats in their lineup that have crushed lefties all season long. In May, the Twins tied for the most home runs against lefties with 16 home runs against lefties in just 315 at-bats. The Twins aren’t hitting for a high average but they’ve got guys who can hit the ball out of the yard.
Zimmerman has already allowed 10 home runs on the year and has allowed a home run in each of his last five starts. There’s only been one game where Zimmerman hasn’t been taken yard and in that game, he still allowed two runs in 4.2 innings.
The Twins should pounce on Zimmerman early and show off their power while Pineda will hold it down.
