Los Angeles Chargers 2021 Schedule, Changes, and Outlook

The Los Angeles Chargers turned heads last season thanks to rookie quarterback Justin Herbert‘s high level of play. The Chargers ended the season at 7-9 overall, but that record isn’t truly indicative of how well they played — until the fourth quarter. Los Angeles blew multiple big leads throughout the season and easily could’ve finished with a winning record had a couple of games broken differently.

The Chargers’ biggest need for the 2021 season is health. If Keenan Allen can stay on the field, the offense should remain in sync. Austin Ekeler proved he can lead the rushing attack without Melvin Gordon, but it remains to be seen if he can handle a starter’s workload for an entire season. Veteran tight end Jared Cook is 34, but Los Angeles is counting on him to replace Hunter Henry.

Defensively, the Chargers took a step back last year, ranking 23rd in points per game allowed. New defensive coordinator Renaldo Hill will try to rejuvenate a defense that was one of the league’s better units from 2017-2019. Los Angeles still has Joey Bosa and Linval Joseph manning the defensive line along with Kenneth Murray and Chris Harris Jr. anchoring the secondary.

Looking at the AFC West, the Chiefs are still the clear top dogs, while the Chargers, Raiders, and Broncos are closer in terms of talent. The Chargers could easily finish second, third, or fourth in their division depending on how some of their close games play out, which makes them tough to project.

Chargers Make 2021-2022 NFL Playoffs? NO (-185)

The Chargers have some nice pieces, but they don’t look like a playoff team yet. Their inability to close out games has been their fatal flaw over the past several years, and it needs to be rectified in order for them to be serious contenders. If everything goes right for them and Herbert keeps improving, they could sneak in as a wild card team, but the smart bet is that they’ll fall short again this year.
