Joe Mixon 2021 Fantasy Football Outlook

Mixon was on his way to another stellar season before a foot injury prematurely ended his 2020 campaign after just six games. Prior to going down, he had already scored four touchdowns and was averaging a whopping 94.3 scrimmage yards per game. Mixon was also averaging a career-high 23.3 touches per game, and should be in line for another massive workload with his former backup Gio Bernard now with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Mixon will return to an offense that is also getting back Joe Burrow, who suffered his own season-ending injury in Week 11. With Burrow back under center, Mixon and the second-year QB will look to pick up where they left off after a full offseason to practice together, which they did not have the luxury of last season due to COVID.

While Mixon is Cincinnati’s undisputed bell cow and will continue to handle most of the carries, he may lose out on some targets to Burrow’s former college teammate Ja’Marr Chase, who already has a built-in connection with Burrow. On the other hand, Burrow may be less likely to sit back in the pocket after last year’s injury, resulting in more dump-offs and check-downs to Mixon.

Regardless of his role in the passing game, Mixon should see enough total volume to be a top-10 RB if he stays healthy. The Bengals have an up-and-coming offense on the rise, and Burrow should be even better this year now that he has one of his former top receivers back in his arsenal. Mixon will also look to benefit from an improving offensive line, which should help his stats on the ground.

Joe Mixon 2021 Fantasy Football Draft Value (PPR)

Mixon looks like a clear-cut RB1 with the ability to join the elite tier of running backs this season. He’s an elusive back with high touchdown equity and a secure role in the passing game. Given that he has a chance to be among the league leaders in total touches at his position, he’s an easy top-10 RB for me. He’s currently going just outside the top 20 picks in preseason PPR fantasy drafts, but I’d consider taking him at any point during the second round based on his volume, talent, and upside.
