Ja’Marr Chase 2021 Fantasy Football Outlook
The Cincinnati Bengals hope to have found their replacement for long-time star receiver A.J. Green — who joined the Arizona Cardinals this offseason — with first-round pick Ja’Marr Chase. Chase will join college teammate Joe Burrow in Cincinnati, where they’ll look to pick up where they left off at LSU after winning a national championship together in 2019. Chase was Burrow’s top weapon that season, but they’ll have to re-establish their chemistry after a year apart.
Chase will join a Bengals receiving corps that includes Tyler Boyd and Tee Higgins, both of whom thrived with Burrow last year before his season was cut short by a knee injury. The rookie will have to outplay both of them if he wants to become Burrow’s preferred receiving option again.
Thankfully for Chase, there should be plenty of targets to go around, as Burrow averaged 40.4 pass attempts last season and Green’s departure leaves 104 targets up for grabs. Cincinnati has a strong run game with Joe Mixon leading the ground attack, but look for them to pass a lot as well if they’re often playing from behind again.
While Chase probably won’t dominate right away as he learns the offense and adjusts to the NFL, he should emerge as the Bengals’ top receiver before long. He’s more talented than Boyd and Higgins, and it’s only a matter of time before Chase and Burrow rediscover their old rapport. Look for Chase to receive around 100 targets and threaten 1,000 receiving yards in his rookie season, making him a potential WR2/WR3 for fantasy purposes.

Chase is poised to have a strong rookie season and is clearly one of the most talented receivers out of his stacked draft class. Expectations are appropriately high for him this season, as he’s currently being drafted in the middle of the seventh round as one of the top-30 wide receivers off the board in preseason fantasy drafts, right around Chase Claypool, Brandon Aiyuk, and Odell Beckham Jr. Assuming Chase and Burrow both stay healthy, Chase certainly has the skills to become Cincinnati’s WR1 and finish in the top 25 at his position this year.
