Austin Ekeler 2021 Fantasy Football Outlook
Ekeler has established himself as one of the top receiving backs in the NFL, totaling 146 catches in 26 games over the past two seasons. He’s also exceeded 100 carries in three straight seasons, helping him surpass 900 yards from scrimmage in each of those campaigns.
The 26-year-old will remain a focal point in the passing game for the Los Angeles Chargers this season, especially after establishing chemistry with Justin Herbert last year. With tight end Hunter Henry departing in free agency, Ekeler may see more short targets this year as well and will continue to be one of the team’s top receiving threats after Keenan Allen. He may lose some carries to Justin Jackson and Joshua Kelley, however, after both helped fill in for him when he was hurt last year.
Ekeler will also benefit from an improved offensive line, which added first-round draft pick Rashawn Slater as well as Corey Linsley and Matt Feiler. The coaching staff also got better with former Saints quarterbacks coach Joe Lombardi signing on as the offensive coordinator for new head coach Brandon Staley. It’s always good to have someone from the Sean Payton coaching tree join your offense, especially in regards to running backs.
The biggest key for Ekeler will be health, as he missed six games last year with a torn hamstring. While he finished the year strong after returning from the IR, the new coaching staff will need to manage his workload to ensure that his 5-foot-10, 200-pound frame doesn’t take too much of a beating. If he can stay on the field, he has the potential to rack up 1,500 total yards and double-digit touchdowns, which would make him an RB1 in PPR formats.
Austin Ekeler 2021 Fantasy Football Draft Value (PPR)
Ekeler has a good chance to set career-highs across the board in an offense that should be among the best in the NFL. His pass-catching skills give him a high floor, since a reception is much more valuable than a rushing attempt in PPR leagues. He projects to be a top-10 RB and is being drafted as such, as his ADP is 10.0 in preseason PPR drafts. If he’s still available at the end of the first round or beginning of the second round, take him.
