Chris Godwin 2021 Fantasy Football Outlook
Chris Godwin is coming off what many fantasy players would call a disappointing season based on where he was going in most fantasy drafts last year, which was typically in the late second round and early third round, often ahead of teammate Mike Evans. In addition to seeing his per-game production slip, Godwin missed four games with a variety of injuries (hamstring, concussion, fractured finger) that limited his overall numbers.
Godwin also received less attention from new quarterback Tom Brady, who likes to spread the ball around and took a while to click with his new teammates. With so many other talented skill players in Tampa Bay, Godwin’s role was diminished somewhat, as his targets per game dropped from 8.6 in 2019 to 7.0 last year.
With the Super Bowl-winning Bucs returning mostly intact, don’t expect a significant spike in Godwin’s targets this year, especially downfield as Brady doesn’t take as many deep shots as his predecessor Jameis Winston did. However, the quality of Godwin’s targets should continue to be excellent, as his catch percentage has increased every year of his career. Godwin should also remain a favorite red-zone target for Brady after hauling in seven touchdowns last year.
Accordingly, Godwin projects as a solid WR2 for 2021. Assuming he stays healthy, he should surpass over 1,000 receiving yards and threaten double-digit touchdowns.
Chris Godwin 2021 Fantasy Football Draft Value (PPR)
Godwin’s significantly cheaper in fantasy drafts this year, as he’s currently going in the fourth and fifth rounds after Evans, Robert Woods, and CeeDee Lamb. While his fantasy floor remains high (assuming Brady doesn’t finally show his age), Godwin no longer has WR1 upside as long as his teammates are healthy. That said, I like his chances of bouncing back and would consider reaching slightly for him.
