MLB Betting Pick of the Day: Best Baseball Pick Today 6/28/21
Arizona Diamondbacks @ St. Louis Cardinals (8:15 p.m. ET)
- Probable Pitchers: RHP Jake Faria (PIT) at LHP Wade LeBlanc (STL)
Diamondbacks To Score Over 3.5 Runs (-115)
Wager: 1.15 units
It’s been a weird season for the Cardinals, who are currently 37-41 despite acquiring Nolan Arenado in the offseason. After a solid start, they’ve been abysmal in June, going 7-17 this month and allowing over five runs per game.
Wade LeBlanc is making his first start for St. Louis after being picked up earlier this month. The Cardinals are already LeBlanc’s fourth team this season, as he previously spent time with the Baltimore Orioles, Milwaukee Brewers, and Texas Rangers. Given that he’s primarily pitched out of the bullpen this year and has yet to log more than three innings in any of his appearances, he’ll likely be serving as an opener tonight.
Even with a quick hook, there’s a good chance Arizona will be able to do some damage against him before he departs. Not only does LeBlanc have a 6.75 ERA and a 1.58 WHIP this year, but opponents are also batting .328/.361/.569 against him and averaging 2.0 HR/9.
While the Diamondbacks have struggled this year, it hasn’t been because of their offense, which currently ranks second in the National League in hits and first in doubles. They’ve also been one of the best teams in baseball against lefties, batting .249/.321/.420 versus southpaws with a 103 wRC+ (10th in MLB).
Several members of Arizona’s projected lineup have excelled against southpaws this season. Ketel Marte is hitting .500 against lefties in 36 at-bats while Stephen Vogt is hitting .348 with a home run. Eduardo Escobar has five home runs in 70 at-bats and leadoff man Josh Rojas has seven extra-base hits in 61 at-bats. Even Nick Ahmed has had great success with an .815 OPS.
The weather should help Arizona as well, as the game temperature is expected to be around 80 degrees for the first pitch. Between the heat and high humidity, the ball should fly tonight.
Accordingly, look for the Diamondbacks to knock LeBlanc out of the game early and score some runs against the Cardinals’ bullpen as well. For a team that’s averaging 4.24 runs per game in a plus matchup, betting over 3.5 is a worthy wager.
