Medina Spirit won the 2021 Kentucky Derby (albeit in controversial fashion), and Rombauer won the 2021 Preakness Stakes. A horse will not win the 2021 Triple Crown — the last to capture all three races was Justify in 2018 — but there’s still plenty of excitement surrounding the Third Jewel of the Triple Crown.

2021 Triple Crown: 2021 Kentucky Derby & 2021 Preakness Stakes Results

The first leg of the 2021 Triple Crown ended with Medina Spirit. Of course, the bigger story came after the race was over. Medina Spirit tested positive for betamethasone, a corticosteroid used to treat inflammation. It’s deemed illegal in any amount on race day by Kentucky rules.

Despite this drama, Medina Spirit was ruled eligible to run in the 2021 Preakness Stakes but settled for a Show, losing dreams of a three-jeweled run.

Pending an ongoing investigation, trainer Bob Baffert has been suspended from entering Medina Spirit or any other horse in the 2021 Belmont Stakes, via a ruling from the New York Racing Association (NYRA).

Meanwhile, the horse riding into Elmont with momentum is Rombauer, who held off Midnight Bourbon and Medina Spirit to win at Pimlico

2021 Belmont Stakes Predictions & Bets

A mile-and-a-half is a long trek for any horse — let alone a three-year-old horse still coming into its own. And while this field is small in nature, it doesn’t lack contenders capable of transforming into horses that should compete at the highest level for years to come.

2021 Belmont Stakes Bet: $25 Win, Place, Show

No. 4 Hot Rod Charlie (7/2)

My pick for the Kentucky Derby is also my selection for the Belmont. While I loved Hot Rod Charlie’s trip in that race, it was unable to come home victorious down the backstretch. Still, this is a horse that proved it could run the distance and the speed figures and past performances suggest it can go longer. Hoping for an improved effort, especially with Flavien Prat climbing aboard after winning the Preakness atop Rombauer.

2021 Belmont Stakes Bet: $4 Exacta Box

No. 4 Hot Rod Charlie (7/2), No. 7 Rock Your World (9/2), No. 6 Known Agenda (6/1)

The goal here, of course, is to find the top two horses. Hot Rod Charlie is clearly in, which means I am looking for other contenders. I’m picking two horses that had rough Kentucky Derby trips that I still feel there is value in. With so many horses, the Derby can often be an unfair measuring stick of a horse’s worth. In the instance of Rock Your World and Known Agenda—two horses that could show promise at the distance—I am including in the mix.
