Matt Manning To 2021 Win AL Rookie of the Year
Bet $20, Payout $620
Manning is one of the top pitching prospects in baseball, ranking 25th on MLB.com’s Top 100 prospects list. While he’s not going to make the big league team out of Spring Training, he could make a significant impact once he’s called up. Manning is currently generating some buzz in camp after introducing a new curveball. He’s also made some changes to his mechanics. This is a pitcher with high-90s velocity and four pitches in his arsenal.
While this is clearly a longshot bet, it’s worth taking a look given the high payout and weak Tigers’ rotation. This is a team with veterans like Julio Teheran and Jose Ureña slated as number four and five starters. There’s an opportunity for Manning to come up in May or June and cement his place in this rotation. If his new pitch and mechanics can help him reach the next level, there’s a chance for this bet to hit. You could do worse at 30-to-1 odds.

Detroit Tigers To Win Under 69.5 Games in 2021
Bet $20, Payout $38
The Tigers are another rebuilding team that should struggle to win games in 2021. While the future looks bright with prospects like Manning, Casey Mize, Tarik Skubal and Spencer Torkelson on the way, it’s going to be tough for this team to win 70+ games this season.
The offense has some underrated hitters like Jonathan Schoop, Robbie Grossman, and Jeimer Candelario. There is also breakout candidate Willi Castro, who slashed .349/.381/.550 with six home runs in 140 plate appearances last season. He’s currently mashing in Spring Training, so the Tigers could have something here. Still, this is a team that ranked 25th in wRC+ in 2020, so they remain one of the weaker offenses in baseball.
The rotation is led by Matthew Boyd, who posted a 30.2 K% in 2019 but has not been able to put it together. The rest of the group includes Spencer Turnbull, Tarik Skubal as well as veterans Teheran and Ureña. Skubal has some upside and we could see Mize and Manning up later in the season, which would provide a boost, but this looks like one of the worst rotations in MLB. The bullpen put up a 4.94 ERA in 2020 and is filled with uninspiring names like Gregory Soto and Bryan Garcia. I’d be surprised if this team wins more than 65 games.
