The Tigers finished with the third-worst record in baseball in 2020, at 23-35. They were historically terrible in 2019 when they finished with only 47 wins. The Tigers have had their ups and downs in the last decade, finishing first in the division four years in a row, including one year with a World Series appearance. They have also finished last in their division four times in the last ten years. The Tigers may be one of the worst teams again in 2021, but they should not be as historically terrible as they have been in recent years.
Detroit’s strengths and weaknesses are a mixed bag. They have a gifted group of young starting pitchers, but the lack of depth in the bullpen is worrying. The Tigers also have a capable group of veterans and prospects on the offensive side of the ball, but lack power bats. They may regret letting first basemen C.J. Cron and Brandon Dixon leave in free agency. Cron took his talents to Colorado, where his power will play exceptionally well for the Rockies. Dixon will spend this season playing in Japan.
The Tigers made a series of pickups during the offseason that will help the team avoid being the worst in baseball. Outfielder Nomar Mazara always showed the potential to be a very good player, but never figured out how to hit lefties. Despite that, he will pair well in right field with fellow offseason addition Robbie Grossman in a straight platoon.
Detroit signed catcher Wilson Ramos, who should overtake incumbents Grayson Greiner and Jake Rogers for the most time behind the plate. The Tigers also picked up corner infielder Renato Nunez who had two very productive seasons for the Orioles. In 2019, he hit 31 home runs and drove in 90. If he breaks camp with the team, he could split time at first or third base, which will decrease his productivity, but he is one of only a handful of players that will bring some much-needed pop to the team.
Detroit signed two pitchers in the offseason as well. Julio Teheran is attempting to make the team, as is Jose Urena. Both pitchers had down years in 2020. Teheran will have to compete for a starting rotation position with several young pitchers, while Urena has seen time out of the bullpen and could start the season there.
Detroit is carrying over several important pieces from last year’s team. Sophomore pitchers Casey Mize and Tarik Skubal should continue to take steps forward. Spencer Turnbull, Michael Fulmer and Matt Boyd should round out the rotation. Turnbull had the best 2020 out of this rotation, but Mize and Skubal are both highly touted young pitchers and should get better with experience.
Second baseman Jonathan Schoop brings back sneaky power at the position in his return to Detroit, and Jeimer Candelario should impress at a corner infield position. Miguel Cabrera will be the primary designated hitter, and though he may not bat .300 anymore, he remains a gifted hitter and will drive in runs.
The Tigers have two top prospects that should see time this season. Third baseman Isaac Paredes showed above-average plate discipline in the minor leagues, but will need to improve that in his second major league stint. Starting pitcher Matt Manning could also get the call this season. He profiles as a future number two starter, with a high strikeout upside.

The Tigers lack a true star player, and will not contend for the division this year, but they should avoid being historically awful again.
