Ke'Bryan Hayes To Win 2021 NL Rookie of the Year
Bet $20, Payout $90
Hayes is considered one of the best prospects in baseball, ranking ninth on MLB.com’s Top 100 prospects list coming into this season. This is a 24-year old player with elite defense and an improving hit tool as well as plus speed. Hayes tore it up in limited action last year, slashing .376/.442/.682 with five home runs in 95 plate appearances. He has looked good in Spring Training so far as well.
The risk here is that Hayes has a limited track record as a hitter, with a career-high of 10 home runs in 480 plate appearances at Triple-A in 2019. He could also see pitchers pitch around him given the lack of protection in the Pirates’ lineup. Having said that, Hayes has an elite defense, so if his bat can continue developing, you’re looking at an elite player and heavy favorite for NL Rookie of the Year.

Pittsburgh Pirates To Win Under 58.5 Games in 2021
Bet $20, Payout $38
The Pirates are in tanking mode and look like the worst team in baseball. Despite the super low number, I’m inclined to bet under the total because of how bereft of talent this team really is across the board. While Hayes is a young stud, there’s really not much else here.
On offense, the Pirates have Hayes along with power-hitter Colin Moran mixed with contact hitters Bryan Reynolds and Adam Frazier as well as injury-prone Gregory Polanco. They’ll need these four hitters to really play well because the rest of this offense is rather weak.
The rotation is completely unproven, with Steven Brault, J.T. Brubaker and Mitch Keller leading the way, but this trio does have some upside. Keller is a former top prospect while Brault showed some flashes last season, namely in his final two starts, where he combined for 16 innings and one earned run. Brubaker has a wipeout slider with a sinker that can induce weak contact. The bullpen posted a 4.62 ERA last year (20th) and it’s hard to see much improvement this year. This is one of the thinnest rosters in the league, so I’d recommend the under, even on the low total.
