2021 AL Rookie of the Year Bet Picks

Alex Kirlloff, 1B/OF, Minnesota Twins (+2200)

I am not sure why Kiriloff’s odds are so low. He’s a lock to join the roster within the first month of play and hits around the heart-of-the-order. Kiriloff is a pro-ready hitter who is needed on a Twins roster that just lost Eddie Rosario to their rival Cleveland.

He has produced well above average batting numbers across every stop in the minors and is just 23-years old. Kiriloff could reasonably hit clean-up with his contact+power profile along with the Twins lack of consistent power bats beyond Nelson Cruz and the oft-injured Josh Donaldson. There is not much in his way and the Twins will probably let him work through kinks given that his lefty bat is much needed on a near-everyday basis and their back-end offense is quite weak.

He’s my favorite *bet* for the AL ROY. Odds are crazy-juicy; he should not be this far from the top among 2021 AL ROY picks.

Randy Arozarena, OF, Tampa Bay Rays (+400)

Randy Arozaena is logically the top AL ROY candidate due to his historic stretch towards the end of 2020. Arozarena broke the record for home runs in a single season’s playoffs and helped lead the Rays to a World Series bout against the Dodgers. While Arozarena’s regular-season track record is short, he has an extensive minor league career that has a few lows but several highs. He is an older rookie at 26-years old but since his trade from St. Louis to Tampa Bay, he has really stabilized as a high-upside/floor prospect.

It’s honestly unfair to consider him a rookie with his production thus far in the majors. Arozarena’s accumulated 8 HR, 19 runs, 13 RBI, 6 SB, and a .286/.384/.607 slash-line through 99 plate appearances. You could even say he’s had a head start but there is the shadow of a domestic violence case that didn’t result in legal action and has been swept under the rug. It is unlikely that this rears its ugly head but it is enough of a dark shadow to turn me off from betting the house here. Also, the Rays do love tinkering with lineups and rotating so if Arozarena struggles even a bit, he may not play every day and fail to rack up numbers necessary for a ROY.

Andrew Vaughn, 1B, Chicago White Sox (+3000)

You see a trend here? Yes, another hitter. Andrew Vaughn, like Kiriloff may be delayed due to his “defense" but should be rotating 1B/DH with Jose Abreu for most of 2021 and hitting towards the middle of an extremely potent White Sox lineup. Vaughn could easily crack 90 RBI as a rookie if he’s up on Opening Day.

How far he taps into his power will determine whether he wins this award or not and while I’m skeptical that he’s hitting 30+ HR this year, I wouldn’t rule it out - he’s that good. Polished bat who could have jumped straight from college to the pros with little turbulence. +3000 is a joke but definitely not the first bet I’m taking.
