Dylan Carlson To Win 2021 NL Rookie Of The Year Award

Carlson finally has the opportunity he deserves. Long gone are the days of cost-controlled delays and waiting behind Dexter Fowler. Carlson presumably has an everyday role with the Cardinals moving forward and could be batting in the heart-of-the-order for a majority of the season (as long as he doesn’t badly slump). Unlike some other NL options who may be slightly better hitters or more polished, Carlson’s team context makes for a much more appealing candidate to bet on.

The Cardinals added a major piece at the top of their lineup in Nolan Arenado and are loaded with good-to-very good offensive pieces all-around. Paul Goldschmidt and Arenado provide major stability and star-power, while Paul DeJong and Tyler O’Neill bring pure pop. Carlson should be smack-dab in between these groups and racking up runs and RBI. Carlson is a plus fielder with a strong arm who should get a decent WAR boost from that side of the ball as well.

He’s my favorite bet for the NL ROY.

Ian Anderson To Win 2021 NL Rookie of the Year

Ian Anderson is a spectacular pitching prospect. He is one of my favorites in recent years and came out firing in all 6 starts last season to the tune of a 1.95 ERA and 1.08 WHIP. The peripheral numbers backed this up a decent bit as his 3.82 SIERA, 2.54 FIP, and 3.45 xFIP all suggest that he was pitching well and not extremely lucky. Obviously, he won’t be a sub-2.00 or probably even sub-3.00 ERA pitcher in 2021 (because then he’d have to be in the MVP convo), but seeing these numbers along with his performance throughout the minors, we can safely assume that his true rookie season will be pretty darn good if he holds up.

Anderson has been relatively healthy since getting drafted 3rd overall out of high school. He features 3 pitches with plus command and plays on a winning team with a great defense behind him. This would honestly be my favorite bet if it weren’t for my bias against betting on SPs due to their inherent volatility with injury/performance.

Spencer Howard, SP, Philadelphia Phillies (+1500)

Spencer Howard To Win 2021 NL Rookie of the Year

Bet $20, Payout $320

Spencer Howard is very, very good and his performance last season is not reflective of the pitcher he is or could be. His gaudy 5.92 ERA and 1.64 WHIP are anomalies. He was pitching through a shoulder injury that eventually landed him on the IL in September. Howard is game-ready at 24-years old with several successful minor league seasons under his belt. The former 45th-overall pick from the 2017 draft will be needed in the rotation this season given Philadelphia’s rotation beyond the sturdy top-three of Nola, Wheeler, and Eflin.

Unfortunately, Howard is currently dealing with back spasms that have shut him down in Spring Training, making this bet much harder to stomach at the moment. However, if he were to return in the next week or so with similar, or hopefully, better odds, this is a good long-shot bet to sprinkle something on for a 2021 NL Rookie sleeper wager.
