Just a few short years ago, the Arizona Diamondbacks were making playoff appearances and challenging the Dodgers for the top spot in the National League West. We are a long time removed from that now. The Diamondbacks are now faced with arguably two of the best three teams in baseball being in their division with both the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres around.
It wouldn’t be the least bit surprising to see the Diamondbacks wind up being the punching bag of the NL West along with the Colorado Rockies. The D’Backs certainly have some players who can be very solid like Ketel Marte and Christian Walker, but their lineup is basically average outside of them. The rotation outside of Zac Gallen is also spotty to say the least with the Madison Bumgarner contract looking like a black hole from the outset.
The Arizona Diamondbacks would surprise lots of people if they made the playoffs or even went .500 for that matter. Their chances of being a surprise team are slim to none, however.
The D’Backs did not really make any major moves this off-season to provide a buffer against the Dodgers and Padres, pointing to the possibility that they are simply going into rebuild mode.
