Adalberto Mondesi To Lead MLB In Stolen Bases For 2021
Bet $20, Payout $35
Mondesi has stolen 67 bases in 676 plate appearances in the last two seasons combined. Mondesi is the heavy favorite for good reason, as he led the majors with 24 steals last season, eight more than second-place Jonathan Villar. This is a player with 98th-percentile sprint speed, playing for a Royals team that has finished fourth, second, and sixth in stolen bases in the last three seasons. THE BAT X projects Mondesi to steal 52 bases in 2021, which should be good enough for the league lead.

Whit Merrifield
- Most Hits (+1000)
- OVER 173.5 Hits (-122)
Merrifield has totaled 206 and 192 hits in his last two full seasons. In 2020, he was well on his way to approach this total once again, posting 70 hits in 265 plate appearances. This is a hitter with elite contact skills, posting a 90+ Z-Contact% in three of his five seasons in the big leagues. Merrifield is a fixture at the top of the Royals’ lineup, hitting exclusively in the leadoff or two-hole in each of the last two seasons. This will allow him to have more plate appearances, putting him in a good position to eclipse this total and challenge for the league lead in total hits.

The Royals are one of the few non-contending teams that have actually tried to improve their roster, trading for former top prospect Andrew Benintendi while signing veteran first baseman Carlos Santana and an innings-eater in Mike Minor.
The lineup should be much better this season, with Benintendi adding some contact skills and Santana providing power and plate discipline. Jorge Soler (injury) and Hunter Dozier (COVID-19) should bounce back after down seasons in 2020. Merrifield and Mondesi provide speed at the top, while Salvador Perez is one of the better offensive catchers in baseball.
The rotation could use some work, but Minor adds veteran stability to the promising duo of Brad Keller and Brady Singer. If Minor can bounce back to his 2019 form, where he put up a 3.59 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, and 15.3 K-BB% in 208.1 innings, that would really stabilize this rotation.
While the bullpen lost closer Trevor Rosenthal to free agency, this is a group that posted a 3.84 ERA (8th) last season. Josh Staumont and Scott Barlow are two upside arms who posted 30+ K% last season. If they can build on their 2020 production, this could be a solid bullpen.
This is a team that played at a 72-win pace last season, finishing with a 26-34 record. They should be able to eclipse this total given the improvements they’ve made this offseason. In fact, it wouldn’t surprise me to see the Royals challenge for the AL Central. They could be one of the surprise teams of 2021.
