Kevin Gausman really broke out during the shortened season, posting a 3.62 ERA (3.24 SIERA) and 1.11 WHIP in 59.2 innings. He improved his strikeout rate by 6.9% (32.2 K%) and cut his walk rate by 0.6% (6.5%). His 25.7 K-BB% (8th) and 15.2 SwStr% (7th) ranked among the best pitchers in baseball. Gausman is a former top prospect who has finally found a home in San Francisco.
While this is a longshot bet, it’s not out of the realm of possibility considering his improvements from last season. He has established himself as the ace of the Giants’ staff, pitching in the friendly confines of Oracle Park. Gausman has lower odds than pitchers like Mike Soroka, who is trying to come back from an Achilles injury. We have seen former Orioles’ pitching prospects become Cy Young winners in the past (Jake Arrieta with the Cubs in 2015), so why not take a shot on Gausman?

The Giants are coming off a surprisingly competitive season, posting a 29-31 record. This is a team that is headed in the right direction, with former Dodgers’ general manager Farhan Zaidi leading the charge as head of baseball operations.

The Giants’ offense was much better than expected, putting up 113 wRC+ (T-7th). They were led by outfielder Mike Yastrzemski, an outfielder with elite plate discipline skills. The team has added underrated and versatile infielder Tommy La Stella, who also can get on base at a high rate.
You can expect to see several platoons in this lineup, which could lead to better production than the projections indicate. This is a lineup that doesn’t jump off the page on paper, but the sum is greater than its parts in this case.
The Giants’ rotation is led by Gausman, who finally emerged last season and should remain one of the best pitchers in the NL in 2021. They added Anthony DeSclafani, Alex Wood and Aaron Sanchez to a rotation that also includes Johnny Cueto.
Nothing particularly exciting there, but there is some upside with DeSclafani and perhaps Wood or Sanchez can find some of their early-career forms. The bullpen is weak, but they added lefty Jake McGee, who should help provide stability in a closer committee with Reyes Moronta.
The Giants are not going to make the playoffs, but they should be able to go over this number, led by an underrated offense and emerging ace. I expect this team to win about 78+ games this season.
