Rashod Bateman Scouting Report

Strengths

  • A physical receiver at the catch point and after the catch
  • Has position flexibility, winning in the slot and on the outside in college
  • Huge catch radius. Easy to see his basketball background in his game
  • Red zone warrior. Can win on jump balls, back shoulder fades, etc.
  • Incredible footwork coming out of his releases. Can win off the line of scrimmage in so many different ways

Needs Improvement

  • Not a burner. Will likely run in the mid 4.5s
  • Does struggle with concentration drops from time to time
  • Not the quickest receiver. Could stand to drop some weight to improve agility

Rashod Bateman NFL Outlook

Over the last few years, the NFL has gone away from big, physical wide receivers who win at the catch point in favor of smaller, faster receivers who can create separation. In turn, we’ve seen some of the “bigger” receivers moved in the slot to create mismatches. A perfect example of that in recent years is CeeDee Lamb, who the Cowboys selected with the No. 17 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. For decades, Lamb would have taken just about every snap on the outside, running slants, comebacks and go routes his entire career. Now, he’s a slot receiver and he is a far more dangerous weapon down the middle of the field.

While Rashod Bateman could play on the outside, it wouldn’t be a surprise if he spends most of his career in the slot. His combination of size and route running will make him attractive to just about every team in the NFL. But his best football will come as an oversized slot receiver in the mold of Larry Fitzgerald or Keenan Allen. In that role, he could quickly become a Pro Bowl level receiver. But if he’s forced to win only on the outside, it could take a while before we see him play at that level. Expect him to be a starter as a rookie and develop into a quality starter by Year 2.

Rashod Bateman NFL Comparison

Chargers WR Keenan Allen: Much like Keenan Allen, Bateman is a physical receiver who wins by being so technical as a route runner. Both players can win at the catch point and after the catch, but they are known for their footwork and releases at the line of scrimmage. Bateman also has the ability to play in the slot and that might be where he is at his best in the NFL.

Rashod Bateman NFL Team Fits

  • Miami Dolphins
  • Baltimore Ravens
  • New York Jets
  • Chicago Bears
  • Philadelphia Eagles

Baltimore Ravens

Finding fits for Bateman isn’t hard as more than half the league could use a player with his skillset. But the teams that need a “No. 1” receiver who can win on third down and in the red zone will love Bateman and his size. The ideal fit would be with the Baltimore Ravens as he would be the perfect complement to Marquise “Hollywood” Brown and would give Lamar Jackson a massive target on the outside. He could also move into the slot in certain packages, giving the Ravens another big-bodied receiver in the middle of the field.

Chicago Bears and Philadelphia Eagles

Chicago is another interesting destination as the Bears are likely to lose Allen Robinson in free agency. Bateman can do a lot of the same things as Robinson in the passing game and would be a great long-term fit with Darnell Mooney on the opposite side. The same goes for the Eagles with Jalen Reagor, who the team selected in the first round. Bateman can win across the middle of the field, while Reagor does his best work down the field.

Rashod Bateman NFL Draft Prediction

Round 1-2: Where Bateman is ultimately drafted is anyone’s guess. His size and production profile would suggest he is a sure-first first-round pick. But with teams chasing speed and quickness at the wide receiver position, it wouldn’t be a complete shock if he fell outside of the first round. Some teams will be scared off by his 4.5 speed despite beating the best cornerbacks in the Big 10 for three years now.

However, look for a playoff team that needs size and physicality on the outside to take a chance on Bateman at the bottom of the first round. At the very worst, look for him to be a top-40 selection in April’s draft.
