MLB Props of the Day: Best Baseball Props Today 9/1/21

Gerrit Cole, SP, New York Yankees @ Los Angeles Angels (7:07 p.m. ET)

When betting the best strikeout props, I look at several hitting categories for teams against that handed pitcher. When reviewing the data for teams in August against right-handed pitchers, the Los Angeles Angels were below average in five of the six categories I look at. They were sixth-worst in strikeout rate (25%), fifth-worst in batting average (.229), second-worst in ISO (.119), third-worst in wOBA (.286), and fourth-worst in wRC+ (81).

Cole has averaged 9.3 strikeouts over his last eight starts, including a nine-strikeout effort against the Angels on August 16. Given LA’s recent offensive struggles, the Yankees’ ace should be able to stay in the game long enough to record at least nine punchouts, making him one of the best MLB prop bets today.

James Kaprielian, SP, Oakland A’s @ Detroit Tigers (7:10 p.m. ET)

Continuing our analysis from above, the Detroit Tigers ranked near the bottom in every offensive category vs. right-handed pitchers in August. They had the third-highest strikeout rate (27%), third-lowest walk rate (6.1%), second-lowest batting average (.210), second-lowest ISO (.119), lowest wOBA (.258), and lowest wRC+ (60).

Kaprielian has averaged 5.6 strikeouts per game this season and is coming off eight punchouts in his most recent start. He’s been a bit inconsistent lately but has recorded at least five strikeouts in 10 of his 17 starts this year. I am banking on Kaprielian hitting the over again in this plus matchup, which is why I’m considering him one of the better MLB player props today.
