MLB Betting Pick of the Day: Best Baseball Pick Today 8/17/21

The Los Angeles Dodgers scored just two runs last night in their first game back from an East Coast road trip, so tonight their offense will look to get back on track with a lot less jet lag and plenty more runs.
The Pittsburgh Pirates will send Wil Crowe to the mound, who’s 3-7 with a 5.27 ERA and 1.56 WHIP on the season. He’s lost both of his August starts thus far, allowing 12 hits (including three homers) and five walks in 8 2/3 innings of work. The 26-year-old rookie is always one or two big hits away from blowing up and has allowed at least three runs in eight of his 17 starts this season.
Crowe will be especially vulnerable against a potent Dodgers lineup that leads the National League in runs scored, walks, and OBP. Los Angeles has won 11 of its last 14 games while averaging 5.9 runs per game during that stretch despite missing Mookie Betts recently.
Even without Betts, the Dodgers have more than enough firepower to score at least three runs against Crowe. Cody Bellinger appears to have gotten himself back on track after struggling for much of the season, while Will Smith, Max Muncy, Corey Seager, and A.J. Pollock have all been swinging hot bats this month.
Crowe has been fortunate to limit the damage lately with all the baserunners he’s allowed, but he’s unlikely to be so lucky against a team that’s tied for fifth in wRC+ with men on base (113). He’s yet to face Los Angeles in his career, but his propensity for home runs (2.0 HR/9) and free passes (4.5 BB/9) is a dangerous combination against a patient, power-laden lineup.
