Week 20 Fantasy Baseball Closers: Depth Chart News, Saves Tips & Bullpen Report

Los Angeles Dodgers

  • Closer: Kenley Jansen
  • Backups: Blake Treinen, Joe Kelly

Kenley Jansen‘s season, on the surface, is not terrible. 22 saves, a 3.27 ERA, and 28.8% K rate are all solid. However, he just cannot stop walking batters. His walk rate is more than double his career average and this is in an attempt to get batters to chase more because his stuff in the zone does not play as well. Jansen is crumbling — three of his past five outings have allowed multiple runs, and he’s walked 6 batters through 4 innings in the process.

If Jansen continues to falter, Blake Treinen is the logical next man up, with Joe Kelly right behind him. Treinen has past closing experience and is having a terrific season with a 21% K-BB, 2.95 SIERA, and twice as many ground balls to fly balls. A speculative add of Treinen is warranted.

Minnesota Twins

  • Closer: Alex Colome
  • Backups: Tyler Duffey, Taylor Rogers (IL)

Alex Colome has regained closing duties in Minnesota, though only by default. Taylor Rogers is on IL, Hansel Robles was traded, and they really do not have better options. Colome does have 2 saves in the past three games, which bodes favorably for his rest-of-season outlook.

Rogers may be out for the season due to his finger issue, and Tyler Duffey does not seem to be in favor with the organization to close despite multiple openings of late. Duffey has 2 saves this season and 3 total in his career, but given how poorly he’s pitched, it’s not shocking that Baldelli opted for the veteran with experience in the role. Colome has pitched poorly this season, but his peripherals are more favorable than Duffey’s.
