David Montgomery 2021 Fantasy Football Outlook
After a promising rookie campaign in 2019, Montgomery drastically exceeded preseason expectations to finish as the sixth-highest scoring running back in PPR formats last year. In addition to rushing for over 1,000 yards, his increased work in the passing game helped him surpass 1,500 yards from scrimmage and tally double-digit touchdowns.
Much of Montgomery’s success came during the second half. After managing just two total touchdowns and averaging 52.4 rushing yards per game in his first nine games, Montgomery was a completely different player down the stretch. Over his final six games, he scored eight touchdowns while racking up 824 yards from scrimmage, including 598 on the ground.
Montgomery will look to build on that strong finish in Chicago’s new-look offense this year, which no longer features the erratic Mitch Trubisky under center. While Montgomery benefited from Tarik Cohen playing just three games last year, the third-year back has established himself as the team’s bell cow in Cohen’s absence and should command the bulk of the Bears’ carries. Montgomery will likely cede some of his passing work to Cohen, but should be able to threaten 1,200-1,300 rushing yards and double-digit scores with an additional game on the schedule this year.

Chicago’s offense has several unknowns heading into 2021, which makes Montgomery’s fantasy value a little tricky to predict. Will he be the RB1 he was last year, or will he end up being more of an RB2 or RB3 with Cohen back in the fold and a new quarterback running the show?
At the moment, fantasy GMs don’t seem particularly bullish on Montgomery. He’s currently going in the middle of the fourth round in PPR fantasy drafts, which is tremendous value for a potential top-10 RB. Definitely take him there if he’s still around, and don’t be shy about reaching for him in the third round.
