There is not much on today’s card. The rainy weather continues to deflate the MLB slate but there’s one spot on the card where it looks like they’ll be able to escape the rain by first pitch.
The Milwaukee Brewers will take on the Pittsburgh Pirates, on the road, in Pittsburgh where it’ll be raining up until about first pitch. Then it’ll all clear out and we’ll have a full game of baseball.
The Pirates will send out Will Crowe, who is 1-4 on the season with a 6.50 ERA. He’s coming off a game where he allowed two home runs along with four runs to the Cardinals through five innings. In that game, the Cardinals had eight base hits and two walks in those five innings. That’s basically 10 base runners in five innings on average.
Crowe already faced Milwaukee this season and allowed two runs in five innings while striking out eight batters. That was the most strikeouts he’s thrown this season, so we’re not expecting that again. The Brewers have actually been terrific against right-handed pitching in the last month or so, despite struggling against Crowe earlier in mid-June.
In the last 30 days, the Brewers have seen serious production from Christian Yelich, Willy Adames, Omar Narvaez, Avisail Garcia, and Keston Hiura, who was recalled from Triple-A not too long ago.
This offense is walking 12.4 percent of the time and has a weighted on-base average of .368 while putting together an isolated power of .236.
Crowe has been solid inducing ground balls this season but is also allowing nearly 50 percent hard contact on the year. The Brewers lineup limits ground balls to under 44 percent in the last 30 days and is hitting a hard contact percentage of 46.6 percent with the expected lineup.
This is the same lineup that exploded against the Chicago Cubs yesterday after they were trailing 7-0 in the first inning. The team ended up winning 15-7 and defeated the Cubs. If I’m putting my money on a team, I want to put it on a team that doesn’t give up and continues to fight. That’s this ball club.
