The Chicago White Sox didn’t get the job done for our team total bet on Tuesday, ultimately falling one run short despite having several chances with runners in scoring position. I guess it wasn’t meant to be, but let’s get back on track tonight!

MLB Betting Pick of the Day: Best Baseball Pick Today 6/24/21
Pittsburgh Pirates @ St. Louis Cardinals (8:15 p.m. ET)
- Probable Pitchers: RHP Chad Kuhl (PIT) at RHP Carlos Martinez (STL)
Over 4.5 runs scored in the first five innings (-125)
Wager: 1.25 units
The Cardinals and Pirates haven’t had the best offenses this season. But tonight, at least, that should change.
Chad Kuhl will take the mound for Pittsburgh, and he’s currently 1-4 with a 5.66 ERA on the season. He’s averaging just over 4 1/3 innings per start and has allowed multiple runs in seven of his eight outings. He also has a bloated 1.49 WHIP due to his 5.7 BB/9 rate, and he’s not missing many bats (6.9 K/9 rate).
Not only is Kuhl allowing lots of baserunners, but he’s also letting too many of them score. His strand rate is only 60.8%, which means nearly 40% of batters that reach base against him are coming around to score. That makes his 13.8 BB% extra worrisome, especially against a Cardinals lineup with several big power bats such as Paul Goldschmidt, Nolan Arenado, and Tyler O’Neill.
On the other hand, Carlos Martinez has been one of the worst pitchers in baseball this year. In addition to allowing the most earned runs in the National League this season (50), he’s 3-8 with a 6.62 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP. He’s also been flat-out terrible in June, surrendering 25 earned runs in 14 2/3 innings while allowing opponents to hammer him for a 1.049 OPS this month.
Pittsburgh’s lineup lacks punch, but it should be able to scrape together at least a few runs against Martinez, who has yielded multiple runs in 11 of his 13 starts. The Pirates have the sixth-lowest strikeout rate (22.6%) in the majors, which bodes well for them given that Martinez has a meager 6.2 K/9 rate this year. Accordingly, Pittsburgh should be able to make lots of contact and string together some hits tonight, resulting in several runs early on (especially if Bryan Reynolds or Gregory Polanco put one in the seats).
Given how poorly both pitchers have performed this year, it’s very possible that one team will hit the over by itself. This game should feature plenty of offense on both sides, making the over a good play here.
