Josh Jacobs 2021 Fantasy Football Outlook

Jacobs turned in another strong campaign in his second season last year, rushing for over 1,000 yards again and tallying 12 touchdowns on the ground. While his running efficiency decreased from 4.8 yards per carry to 3.9 yards per carry, he compensated with additional work in the passing game, resulting in over 1,300 yards from scrimmage for the second consecutive year.

That said, Jacobs’ fantasy outlook appears less bright for the 2021 NFL season. The Las Vegas Raiders signed Kenyan Drake in the offseason, who is expected to consume a large portion of Jacobs’ touches this year. Given Drake’s versatility and ability to find the end zone, Jon Gruden will likely mix and match them, making their week-to-week performances more volatile. After serving as the Raiders’ bell cow over the past two years, Jacobs is now looking at a potential timeshare in the backfield, which lowers his fantasy value significantly.

Additionally, Jacobs will run behind a drastically reshaped offensive line after the club traded center Rodney Hudson, guard Gabe Jackson, and tackle Trent Brown during the offseason. The return of guard Richie Incognito is a positive for the running game, but having an unproven center and a rookie right tackle in Alex Leatherwood — viewed by many pundits as a reach — makes this unit a massive question mark entering 2021.

All things considered, it’s unwise to expect a repeat of last season for Jacobs, who finished as a top-10 running back in PPR leagues. His best-case scenario this year is probably finishing in the top 20 or 25, as he may fall short of 1,000 rushing yards and will be hard-pressed to reach double-digit touchdowns again due to Drake’s presence.

Josh Jacobs 2021 Fantasy Football Draft Value (PPR)

After finishing as an RB1 last year, Jacobs profiles as an RB2 or RB3 this year with a lower floor and ceiling than he had previously. He’s currently going in the middle of the fourth round in preseason fantasy drafts as the 20th running back off the board, and even that still feels a bit high. I view him as more of a fringe RB2 who should probably be going a round later. If he falls to you in the fifth round or after he’s worth considering, but tread carefully given the uncertainty surrounding his usage.
