Montreal Canadiens Round 1 Recap
It looked like the Canadiens were headed for an early playoff exit after falling behind 3-1 in their first-round series against the Toronto Maple Leafs, but they rallied to win the next three games and take the series in seven.
Montreal was led by winger Tyler Toffoli, who scored twice and chipped in three assists. Jesper Kotkaniemi netted three goals in total, including the game-winning overtime score in Game 6 to force Game 7. Goalie Carey Price came up huge in the final two games as well, limiting the Maple Leafs to just three goals combined.
Price’s shutdown performance couldn’t have come at a better time, capping off an excellent series for the 33-year-old goaltender. He allowed just 2.2 goals per game and compiled a .932 save percentage. After closing the door on Toronto, Price will look to carry that momentum into this series with Winnipeg.
Winnipeg Jets Round 1 Recap
The Jets are flying high after sweeping the Edmonton Oilers in Round 1. The series was short but hard-fought, as the final three wins were all by one goal, while the last two victories both came in overtime.
Winnipeg had a balanced offense in Round 1 as Nik Ehlers, Blake Wheeler, Mark Scheifele, and Kyle Connor all scored two goals apiece. Even Josh Morrissey contributed three assists and a goal in Round 1 from the blue line.
Winnipeg’s defense did an excellent job as well, especially early on in the series by limiting Edmonton to just one goal on its home ice. Goalie Connor Hellebuyck was sensational in net, pitching a shutout in Game 2 and stopping 151 of Edmonton’s 159 shots. If he keeps playing like that, the Jets will be tough to beat.
Montreal Canadiens vs Winnipeg Jets Matchup
The Canadiens and Jets were the two of the least balanced teams in the NHL this year, as both had mostly average offensive and defensive metrics. Winnipeg was able to go 6-3 during the regular season against Montreal — including three overtime wins — to earn home-ice advantage in the series.
While this series should be close, I don’t expect it to go the distance. Winnipeg’s top-six forwards are a difference-maker, as the Jets have more experienced scoring depth and the ability to survive offensive droughts. Hellebuyck can also go toe-to-toe in net with Price.
Montreal Canadiens vs Winnipeg Jets NHL Playoffs Prediction & Bet Pick
Montreal Canadiens vs Winnipeg Jets Series Prediction
- Winnipeg Jets win series, 4-2
These two teams are pretty evenly matched, so I’m not expecting another sweep for Winnipeg here. The Canadiens will make things interesting and win a few games, but the Jets will ultimately prevail.
Montreal Canadiens vs Winnipeg Jets Bet Pick
Winnipeg Jets To Win Series (-125)
Winnipeg’s deeper offense will be too much for Price and Montreal’s defense to handle, especially since the Jets are better rested and will have the home-ice edge as well.
