Chicago Bears 2021 Schedule, Changes, and Outlook
The Bears used the offseason to re-tool at quarterback, signing Andy Dalton and trading up in the draft for Justin Fields. The position has been a problem area for Chicago for a while now, but the hope is that bringing in some fresh blood along with a veteran presence will give the team a much-needed boost.
While Dalton is expected to start initially, he’s merely a placeholder until Fields is ready. Fields is an electric prospect who dominated college football the past two seasons, finishing his college career with a 67:9 TD/INT ratio and a 68.4 completion percentage. He’s Chicago’s quarterback of the future, and it’s only a matter of time before he gets the keys to the offense.
The rest of the Bears roster is relatively the same as last year’s 8-8 squad. Allen Robinson, Darnell Mooney, and Anthony Miller remain the top receiving options, while David Montgomery will once again lead the backfield. Cole Kmet and Jimmy Graham make for an interesting tight-end duo as well, so Dalton and Fields will have some weapons to work with.
Chicago’s defense has been a strength over the past several years, but it seems poised for some regression. The loss of top cornerback Kyle Fuller will hurt, especially since his replacement Jaylon Johnson rated as one of the worst cornerbacks in the NFL last year. The Bears also have a first-year defensive coordinator in Sean Desai, who is tasked with replacing long-time NFL mind Chuck Pagano.
So while the Bears should make a significant leap on offense, they’ll likely take a step back on defense, which could ultimately keep them around .500 again.
Chicago Bears 2021 Win Total Bet Pick
Bears To Win OVER 7.5 Games In 2021 NFL Season (-105)
Chicago is coming off back-to-back 8-8 seasons that were hampered by erratic quarterback play. With Fields set to take over shortly, the Bears believe they’ve found a long-term solution at the position.
If and when he does step in, he should provide a significant boost over Dalton as well as his predecessors Mitch Trubisky and Nick Foles. He’ll likely face some challenges, however, as most first-year quarterbacks do, and his inexperience may cost the Bears some games early on.
Even if Fields doesn’t set the world on fire, Matt Nagy‘s squad still has enough talent elsewhere to win at least 8-9 games again, especially with an extra game on the schedule this year.
