D’Andre Swift 2021 Fantasy Football Outlook
As a rookie last season, D’Andre Swift emerged as the Detroit Lions’ top running back, outplaying both Adrian Peterson and Kerryon Johnson. While his carries were somewhat sporadic due to Detroit’s timeshare, his strong play earned him more touches as the season progressed. After receiving double-digit carries just once in his first seven games, he only had one game in his final six where he did not get at least 10 carries.
Swift also proved to be highly effective around the goal line, tallying eight rushing touchdowns and adding two more as a receiver. So while his volume was a bit lacking, he compensated with his nose for the end zone as well as his receiving work, which was substantial. Swift consistently had 3-5 catches per game with around 20-30 receiving yards, which bolstered his fantasy value in PPR leagues.
The hope is that new offensive coordinator Anthony Lynn will be able to unlock Swift’s full potential, especially in the passing game. Lynn previously coached Austin Ekeler with the Los Angeles Chargers, so he should be able to get the most out of Swift. The 22-year-old sophomore should also benefit from new quarterback Jared Goff, who prefers shorter throws and checks down more frequently than his predecessor, Matthew Stafford.
Of course, the biggest boost for Swift is that he’ll no longer be competing with Peterson and Johnson for carries. While Jamaal Williams will likely see significant work out of the backfield, Swift is now the team’s top tailback and will handle a heavier workload, making him more consistent on a week-to-week basis. With the Lions lacking weapons following Kenny Golladay‘s departure as well, they’ll be forced to lean on Swift this year.
D’Andre Swift 2021 Fantasy Football Draft Value (PPR)
Swift’s fantasy value is set to skyrocket this season into RB1/RB2 territory, especially in PPR formats. He’ll be a focal point of Detroit’s offense and should see his volume increase considerably. His bright outlook is evident in fantasy drafts, where he’s going in the third round as the RB16. Given his upside, he’s certainly worth taking there.
