Keenan Allen 2021 Fantasy Football Outlook

After playing his entire career with Philip Rivers under center, Allen didn’t skip a beat with rookie quarterback Justin Herbert last year. The 2020 season was business as usual for Allen, who generated his third 100-catch campaign in the last four seasons and fell eight yards shy of his fourth straight 1,000-yard campaign. He also matched his career-high with eight receiving touchdowns, establishing a strong rapport with Herbert from the start.

Accordingly, expect more of the same from Allen in 2021, as he’s about as reliable and consistent as they come. The Chargers have a new head coach (Brandon Staley) and offensive coordinator (Joe Lombardi), but should remain a pass-heavy offense, especially if their defense continues to keep them involved in high-scoring affairs.

Coming off one of the best rookie seasons in recent memory, it’s possible that Herbert could improve in his second season, which would benefit Allen as his top receiver. Allen could also get a few more looks this year following the offseason departure of Hunter Henry to the New England Patriots.

If there are any concerns with Allen, it’s that he’s potentially slowing down a bit as he enters his age-29 season and doesn’t get as many downfield looks as he used to. His 9.9 yards per reception last year was the lowest of his career, continuing a three-year trend of decline. Additionally, his 6.7 yards per target was the second-lowest of his career, indicating that he may not be as explosive as he once was.

Even so, Allen remains a borderline WR1 based on his volume alone, which could increase this year given his status as the team’s top dog in the receiving corps. If Herbert continues to grow and develop, that should help mitigate any possible age-related decline we may see from Allen as well. Assuming Allen stays healthy, he should be good for around 150 targets, 100 receptions, over 1,000 receiving yards, and close to double-digit touchdowns.

Keenan Allen 2021 Fantasy Football Draft Value (PPR)

Despite the coaching changes in Los Angeles, Allen is in line for another season as the team’s top receiving threat. After finishing last season as a top-10 wide receiver in PPR formats, he’s currently going as the 10th receiver off the board in fantasy drafts, typically either at the end of the third round or the beginning of the fourth round. Similar to receivers like Adam Thielen, Julio Jones, and Mike Evans, Allen is a safe, proven wideout who you can lock into your fantasy lineup every week as long as he’s healthy.
