Jacksonville Jaguars 2021 Schedule, Changes, and Outlook
There’s an old adage that it’s always darkest before the dawn, and the Jaguars undoubtedly hope that holds true when it comes to their franchise in 2021. After marks of 5-11, 6-10, and 1-15 the last three seasons under Doug Marrone, Jacksonville turned the page in sensational fashion by luring college legend Urban Meyer to the pro game for the first time. His momentous arrival coincided with the team having the No. 1 overall pick in its lap, which naturally equated to the drafting of All-World Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence. That synergistic development gives Meyer the sizable advantage of having his franchise quarterback in the fold right from Day 1 of his coaching tenure, which naturally was a significant draw for him with respect to accepting the job.
It certainly didn’t hurt Jacksonville was also in possession of a second first-round pick last April, which was invested in Lawrence’s explosive college teammate Travis Etienne. He joins a diverse running back room that also features last year’s undrafted rookie sensation James Robinson and capable veteran Carlos Hyde. In the pass-catching corps, Lawrence will work with a group that should be one of the more explosive in the league – D.J. Chark, Marvin Jones Jr., Collin Johnson, and Phillip Dorsett can all get downfield in a hurry.
There is still plenty of work to do on the offensive line and the front seven of the defense, however, and those issues aren’t exactly the kind to get rectified in one offseason. The Jags allowed 44 sacks a year ago, and although Lawrence’s mobility will certainly help, a rookie quarterback is naturally best served the less there is to worry about when dropping back. Jacksonville will also have to shore itself up against the run before it can make any serious strides – the Jags play in a division with Derrick Henry and Jonathan Taylor, for starters.
Jacksonville’s last-place schedule isn’t necessarily the cakewalk one would expect, either. The Cardinals, Seahawks, Bills, Dolphins, 49ers, and Rams are among the tough draws, without even factoring in their division games against the Titans and Colts and what should be an improved Bengals team with Joe Burrow and Joe Mixon back to full health.

The price on “Yes” is undeniably attractive, but it still goes against conventional wisdom. The Jags will undoubtedly get a significant boost from their coaching and talent additions, and there’s certainly room for a 6-to-7-win improvement from 2020’s one victory with 17 games on the docket this season. Nevertheless, Meyer and company are at least a year away from the postseason, in my view, but once they get there, they should be frequent visitors as long as the team continues to add talent on the defensive side of the ball in particular.
