May 21 MLB Prop Bets

Chicago White Sox @ New York Yankees (7:05 p.m. ET)

White Sox Over 3.5 runs scored (-135)

Wager: 1.35 units (win would pay out 2.2 units)

If you’ve been paying attention these last two seasons, you’d know just how great the White Sox are when facing lefties. This season, the White Sox lead the league in batting average against lefties, hitting .297. As a team, they’ve put together a weighted on-base average (wOBA) of .372 against lefties, which leads the league by a wide margin.

The St. Louis Cardinals have a wOBA of .347 against lefties and sit right below the White Sox in that category as the second place team. The White Sox also have a batting average of balls in play (BABIP) of .363. Basically, when the ball is put in play against lefties, the White Sox are hitting .363 as a team, which is an absurd number to say the least.

Jordan Montgomery will take the hill for the Yankees, and he’s been terrible against righties, as a left-handed pitcher. Righties are hitting .277 against Montgomery with an on base percentage of .311. Every single extra base hit allowed has been to right-handed batters, including nine doubles and six home runs. He’s also walked 10 batters and allowed 20 runs batted in from righties this season.

The White Sox are expected to have nine right-handers in the lineup, including Tim Anderson, who already has two hits against Montgomery in six plate appearances. Jose Abreu is still out of the lineup but there will be four batters in the lineup that have a wOBA of .404 or greater and eight of the nine batters have a wOBA of .311 or better.

Montgomery is striking out fewer righties and allowing 7.6 percent of walks to right-handed batters. His regular stats look better due to facing lefties. But he won’t be facing a single lefty in this White Sox lineup.

The best hitting team against lefties gets nine innings to score four runs against Montgomery and the Yankees bullpen. I’ll take it.

Oakland Athletics @ Los Angeles Angels (9:38 p.m. ET)

  • Athletics @ Angels 5/21/21 Game Preview
  • Probable Pitchers: RHP James Kaprielian (OAK) vs. LHP Jose Quintana (LAA)

Athletics over 3.5 runs scored (-165)

Wager: 1.65 units (win would pay 1 unit)

Jose Quintana will take the mound for the Angels after allowing three runs on five hits to the Red Sox in less than five innings. Quintana hasn’t pitched through five innings since April 21, in a game against the Rangers, where he allowed two hits, four walks and had eight strikeouts. Since then he’s gone 3.1 innings, 3.2 innings, four innings, and 4.1 innings iin his last four starts, allowing 14 runs in those 15.1 innings.

Quintana has been solid against lefties this season, holding lefties to a .261 wOBA. He’s limited extra base hits and power to lefties, as a left-handed batter but has walked 15.6 percent of lefties.

His strikeouts have been high this season, especially against lefties, where he’s striking out 46.9 percent of batters. Against righties, his strikeout numbers are still high but they’re nowhere near as absurd as his rate against lefties. He’s fanning 27.4 percent of righties and still walking 14.7 percent of those batters.

The Athletics will have a projected eight righties in the lineup against Quintana. There’s no need to look at the left-handed numbers, especially because that one lefty, Matt Olson, actually has solid numbers against lefties this season with a high wOBA and solid power numbers.

The Athletics will have five batters who have a wOBA of .347 or greater and seven batters with a wOBA of .300 or better. Oakland currently has 21 home runs against lefties this season, which is second most in the MLB behind the Houston Astros, who have 23.

They’ve also hit 28 doubles and a triple to add to their extra base barrage against lefties this season. Out of 118 hits against lefties, 50 have been for extra bases.

Quintana has allowed righties to hit .338 and those righties also have an on base percentage of .432 with an OPS sitting at .919. He’s walked 14 right-handed batters and A’s right-handed bats are walking 8.8 percent of the time against the lefty.

Plus, even if Quintana is able to work out of damage, somehow, the A’s will be dealt the Angels bullpen, which is labeled at the second worst in the MLB, behind the Texas Rangers.

This bet might be over by the fourth inning.
