Saints 2021 Schedule, Changes, and Outlook

The Saints will have their work cut out for them next season with seven games coming against teams that had a winning record in 2020, including two against the defending Super Bowl champions. After future Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees retired this offseason, they’ll have to attack this schedule with a new signal caller leading their huddle. Taysom Hill will likely start the season after inking a new $140 million contract, although former No. 1 overall draft pick Jameis Winston could also be in the mix.

Despite struggling to throw the ball downfield, the Saints still ranked fifth in points per game (30.1) last year thanks to their elite ground game, which produced a league-high 30 rushing touchdowns. Sixteen of those rushing TDs came from Alvin Kamara, who has a case for the NFL’s top running back. He has plenty of help from New Orleans’ offensive line, too, which ranks among the league’s best.

The Saints also feature a strong defense that allowed the fifth-fewest points per game in the NFL last year (21.1). After focusing on defense early in the 2021 NFL Draft, New Orleans should once again boast one of the top units in the game. Overall, the roster remains well-rounded and flush with talent.

While their offense will have to adapt without Brees, the Saints have formed a new identity as a ground-and-pound offense, and their defense continues to be one of the better groups in the NFL. They’ll be hard-pressed to overtake the Bucs to win the NFC South, but they should at least be able to capture a wild card berth.
