Stephen Strasburg Injury Update: Shoulder Inflammation Analysis, Timetable For Return

Last Updated: Apr 20, 2021

Injuries have struck yet again for Washington Nationals ace SP Stephen Strasburg. After missing virtually the entire 2020 season with carpal tunnel neuritis in his throwing arm that ultimately required surgery, it was expected that Strasburg would return to form. However, Strasburg has since been placed on the 10-day IL with right shoulder inflammation.

Stephen Strasburg Injury Update: Shoulder Inflammation Analysis, Timetable For Return

Stephen Strasburg’s past shoulder inflammation

While there are not any specific details regarding what is causing the inflammation, he does demonstrate a past history of shoulder inflammation. In 2010, he missed 20 total days before returning and tearing his UCL, requiring Tommy John surgery. In 2018, he missed 42 total days before returning for one start. This precluded another trip to the DL with cervical nerve impingement. This caused him to miss another month following the nerve injury.

With this latest injury, he was spotted rubbing his neck/shoulder area in the dugout following his first outing of the season. While this doesn’t indicate the specific cause of the latest injury, this is concerning as this could be a symptom of the above-mentioned cervical nerve issues of the past. This could also be a new, unrelated issue due to not pitching competitively in nearly 18 months due to his carpal tunnel neuritis last year.

Stephen Strasburg Betting & Fantasy Baseball Outlook

This is something to closely watch as Strasburg has a lot of mileage on his arm with an extensive injury history. His injury does fit trends historically seen early in the MLB season which isn’t all that concerning, but his prior bouts of shoulder inflammation are. It is difficult to identify a return timeline, but I strongly anticipate that he will be out longer than 10 days. The Nationals are a tough bet unless Max Scherzer is pitching; ideally, Strasburg gets better news than what his past suggests.
