Week 17 Fantasy Basketball Sleepers: Carmelo Anthony In Spotlight Again

Last Updated: Apr 21, 2021

Kev Mahserejian offers up his Week 17 Fantasy Basketball Sleepers, and his NBA Week 17 Sleeper Picks might include waiver-wire pickups who’ve fallen through the cracks into free agency. Roster percentages refer to figures from Yahoo! Sports fantasy basketball leagues.

Week 17 Fantasy Basketball Sleepers

Carmelo Anthony, SF/PF, Portland Trail Blazers (42% rostered)

With Damian Lillard dealing with a hamstring injury, Carmelo Anthony’s scoring duties in Portland have increased. Over the past three games, Anthony is averaging 20.7 points, 2.7 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 3.3 threes while shooting 50% from the field. He’s turned the ball over fewer than 2 times per game and has made all 6 of his attempted free throws.

He is basically just a scorer who can provide rebounds but that’s no issue if his shooting volume remains up and he does not hurt you elsewhere. Anthony could easily be relegated to a useless fantasy role once Lillard returns so this add is only for a short period of time.

Landry Shamet, PG/SG, Denver Nuggets (10%)

Landry Shamet has been on fire from three-point range over the past 4 games. He is averaging 21.5 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists, and 4.8!! threes while shooting 55% from the field and 85% from the free-throw line. You have to consider him as a streamer if James Harden remains out this coming week due to his hamstring injury.

Shamet has been disappointing as a whole on the season and could easily fall flat but the volume in this stretch has been there with 12.8 attempts per game and a 4-game week ahead to fill up the stat sheet. If KD is out as well, the green light only gets greener.

Bruce Brown, SG, Brooklyn Nets (9%)

Bruce Brown is another beneficiary of the James Harden (hamstring) injury but his production comes in the form of rebounds and stocks rather than points and threes like Shamet. Brown has been a consistently odd fantasy producer this season. When the trio of Durant, Harden, and Irving is healthy, Brown is relegated to the shadow realm. When one of the trio is out, Brown becomes moderately viable. When TWO of the trio are out, Brown is a must-own fantasy asset who will dominate the world.

All we know at the moment is that Harden is out for the next few games which will make Brown a consideration. If Durant’s thigh injury suffered on Sunday lingers into this week, particularly the first game on Tuesday, then Brown should be rostered everywhere.
