April 8 MLB Prop Bet Picks

Alex Bregman, Houston Astros vs. Oakland Athletics

To Record An RBI (-130)

Wager: 1 unit (win would pay 1.77 units)

Bregman is one of several Astros that has started the season looking much more like the high-caliber hitter he was prior to last year’s washout regular season. The slugging third baseman owns a .429/.478/.762 slash and already has six RBI through five games. Bregman would benefit from Michael Brantley, who typically hits ahead of him in the No. 2 hole, coming back from his wrist injury Thursday, but even if he doesn’t suit up, he still has Jose Altuve as a very likely on-base presence that he could drive in.

Like Bregman, Altuve looks back to his old self and has a .414 OBP through six games. Bregman also has a good matchup early in the game against A’s starter Cole Irvin, who gave up four earned runs on seven hits in his first start of the season, plunking two batters along the way and also uncorking a wild pitch.

Irvin also allowed 34 earned runs over his first 45.1 major-league innings in the previous two seasons, while Bregman may be due to exert even more damage than he already has in the early going considering he’s boasting a 25.0 percent line-drive rate and massive 62.5 % hard-contact rate in his first 23 plate appearances.

Ramon Laureano, Oakland Athletics at Houston Astros

To Record A Stolen Base (+400)

Wager: 1 unit (win would pay 5.00 units)

This is kind of a fun extra bonus pick for today that’s worthy of consideration because of the combination of the excellent price and the not-so-low probability it could cash. Laureano just swiped a pair of bases against the Dodgers on Wednesday and already has four through the first four games.

He’s clearly got the green light on the basepaths and his .375 OBP in the early going underscores that he’s been getting on frequently over the small sample.

Speaking of small samples, opponents are 2-for-2 on stolen-base attempts against the Astros thus far (Laureano has one of them), and with Oakland in desperate need of manufacturing runs, it wouldn’t surprise to see Laureano try and take off if he’s on Thursday.
