While the Eagles are eliminated from the playoffs, this is a must-have game for the Football Team. If they win, they will clinch the NFC East as well as a playoff berth. If they lose, the winner of the Cowboys-Giants game will get it. The Football Team was hot, winners of four straight until they lost Alex Smith and as a result, they have lost each of their past two games. He looks like he’s going to start, though. The Eagles have lost six of their past seven games, including two straight. They can play spoiler to their NFC East division foes in the NFL’s regular-season finale.

Washington-Eagles Key Injuries

Washington

Football Team QB Alex Smith is still dealing with a calf injury that has sidelined him for each of the past two games, but reports say he’s expected to go for the finale. If Smith is down, Taylor Heinicke will draw the start. In relief work in last week’s loss following the benching of Dwayne Haskins, who was just released, Heinicke completed 12-of-19 passes for 137 yards and a touchdown while adding three rushes for 22 yards in the fourth quarter.

Eagles

Philadelphia has a litany of main players sitting out, including RB Miles Sanders, DT Fletcher Cox, TE Dallas Goedert and WR DeSean Jackson.

Washington-Eagles Players to Watch

While Miles Sanders has played well ever since the Eagles moved off of Carson Wentz to Jalen Hurts, outside of the rookie’s first start back in Week 14’s win over the Saints in which Sanders totaled 136 and two touchdowns — it was only his second game with 100+ rushing yards (115) this season — he has yet to pop like he did that week. In each of his past two games, both Eagles losses, Sanders has totaled fewer than 90 yards with only one score, which came in last week’s loss to Dallas.

Now, Sanders will get a Football Team defense yielding the 12th fewest rushing yards per game (112.5). Sanders has played in two career games against Washington. Both last season. While in the first meeting, Sanders was pedestrian, he went off in the second for 172 total yards and two scores. Football Team TE Logan Thomas has had a breakout season so far, but with uncertainties surrounding WR Terry McLaurin’s playing status for the win or go home season finale against the Eagles — McLaurin is dealing with an ankle injury that sidelined him for last week’s loss to the Panthers — Thomas must step up. In each of his past two games, Thomas has drawn 15 and 12 targets respectively. In fact, back in Week 14’s loss to Seattle, Thomas out-targeted McLaurin 15-to-12. Last week with McLaurin sidelined, Thomas had 12 targets, hauling in seven of them for 63 yards. Despite his uptick in target share, Thomas has not scored in three games. Thomas will look to find the end zone and help the Football Team into the postseason facing an Eagles defense surrendering the seventh-most receptions (77), the 13th most yards (798), and the fourth most touchdowns (8) to enemy tight ends in 2020. Thomas dropped a 4/37/1 line on eight targets on the Eagles way back in the 2020 season opener.

BEST BET: Over 43.5 (-115)

While the Eagles’ offense has caught fire under Jalen Hurts, they stumbled in last week’s terrific matchup against Dallas. They only scored 17 points in the defeat following two straight games with 24+ points. Meanwhile, the Football Team gets a sign of relief. Antonio Gibson did return in last week’s loss to Carolina, and Alex Smith (calf) and Terry McLaurin (ankle) are expected to play. The Football Team already has a hard time scoring points with their regular starters. While the total went Over in the Eagles’ past three games with Hurts starting, it went Under in the six previous games. Even with all their top players listed as Out, Washington’s defense should have trouble dealing with the dynamic rookie. The Under is 8-2 in the Football Team’s past eight games, hitting in four straight. The Over is 4-3 in the past seven meetings between the Eagles and the Football Team, hitting in three straight including their Week 1 matchup.

CONSIDER: Eagles +2 (-110)

While the Football Team has played well in the second half, they hang their hat of defense. Their offense is as suspect as they come. Meanwhile, the Eagles have not played well at all but normally owns the Football Team outside of their loss in Week 1. With the Football Team possibly down to their third quarterback, Taylor Heinicke, plus, the uncertainly surrounding Terry McLaurin’s playing status, scoring points on offense will be difficult to come by. The Football Team is 5-1 against the spread in their past six games, failing to cover last week. The Eagles are 2-3 ATS in their past five games, failing to cover in two straight. The Eagles are 5-2 ATS in their past seven meetings with the Football Team, failing to cover in Week 1’s loss.

CONSIDER: Eagles (+110)

While the Eagles have lost their past two games against the Cowboys and Cardinals, I do think they pull this one off at home. Both of those losses were on the road games facing teams with explosive passing offenses. And while the Football Team’s defense is terrific, the last time the Eagles won a game, which was back in Week 13 against the Saints in Jalen Hurts’ first start, they exploited a New Orleans defense which at the time, was operating as the best unit in the NFL. The Eagles are 6-1 against the Football Team straight up in their past seven games, losing in the season opener following six straight wins. The Football Team has lost two straight games following a four-game winning streak. They lost both games with Smith out. Anthony Cervino is 61-50-2 on his NFL Best Bets in 2020.
