2024 PGA Championship Odds & Field

ByJohn Arlia

May 15, 2024

Golf’s second major championship of the year is upon us.

The 2024 PGA Championship takes place this week at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, K.Y., which will host the tournament for the first time since 2014 when Rory McIlroy captured the title by one shot over Phil Mickelson.

Last year, Brooks Koepka claimed his fifth major championship and third Wanamaker Trophy at Oak Hill Country Club, fending off Viktor Hovland and a late Sunday charge from Scottie Scheffler.

Scheffler, McIlroy, and Koepka all come into this week on the back of victories in their most recent starts, so there’s plenty to be excited about at the top of the betting board.

Let’s dive into the latest 2024 PGA Championship odds and examine the field by singling out some favorites and sleepers to watch this week.

PGA Championship Favorites

Scottie Scheffler (+400)

The reigning Masters champion and current World No. 1 has won four of his last five starts. His lone miss during that sublime stretch was a T-2 finish at the Houston Open. Scheffler has been by far the best player in the world over the last year-plus and will almost undoubtedly be in the mix this week.

If you’re looking for potential concerns, Scheffler hasn’t played since winning the RBC Heritage in late April as he and his wife, Meredith, awaited the birth of their first child. Scheffler’s caddie, Ted Scott, will also miss Saturday’s round to attend his son’s high school graduation. He’ll return to the bag on Sunday.

Rory McIlroy (+750)

McIlroy returns to the site of his last major championship victory in scorching form after winning last week’s Wells Fargo Championship, his fourth victory at Quail Hollow. Before that, he and Irishman Shane Lowry took home the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, a team-format event, in a playoff.

The 35-year-old also arrives at Valhalla with some off-course news: He has reportedly filed for a divorce from his wife, Erica, after seven years of marriage.

Despite that, if I had to make a pick among the favorites, I’d take McIlroy as my best golf bet today.

Xander Schauffele (+1400)

Is this finally Schauffele’s breakout moment? The 30-year-old has come so close many times, earning six top-five finishes in the major championships without a victory.

Schauffele has eight top-10 finishes in 12 starts this PGA Tour season, including a solo eighth at The Masters and last week’s runner-up finish to McIlroy at the Wells Fargo. His time will come eventually.

Brooks Koepka (+1600)

Koepka has always been a big-game hunter, often appearing at the top of the leaderboard when the stakes are the highest. His three PGA Championship titles and five major championships prove those credentials.

The 34-year-old won LIV Golf’s most recent event in Singapore two weeks ago, outdueling Australians Cameron Smith and Marc Leishman to win by two.

PGA Championship Field

As one of the four majors, the PGA Championship will always attract the game’s elite players.

The 2024 tournament will be no different, as a collection of the top talents from the PGA Tour, LIV Golf, and the European Tour descend on Valhalla. There are 156 players in the field, with 16 past winners and 33 major champions set to compete.

Can LIV Golf players compete in the PGA Championship?

LIV Golf players can play in the PGA Championship if they qualify or are extended a special invitation. In all, 16 players will represent LIV Golf at this year’s tournament, including Koepka, Smith, Bryson DeChambeau, Jon Rahm, Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, and Tyrell Hatton.

PGA Championship Sleepers

Will Zalatoris (+7500)

Health has been an issue for Zalatoris, who missed each of the 2023 major championships after undergoing back surgery.

The 27-year-old hasn’t found much consistency since returning to the PGA Tour, but he finished inside the top 10 at Augusta National and tends to play his best golf on long, challenging courses. Valhalla fits that qualification, so I’m intrigued by these odds.

Akshay Bhatia (+13000)

Bhatia will make his PGA Championship debut this week, but the 22-year-old talent has already won at Valhalla, triumphing at the 2018 Junior PGA Championship on this very same course.

The lefty has seven top-25 finishes on the PGA Tour this season, including a win at the Valero Texas Open, which qualified him for The Masters. Bhatia finished T-35 on his first trip to Augusta National but showed that he has the ball striking and short game to compete.

Taylor Pendrith (+18000)

If driving distance is a prerequisite for success, backing Pendrith is a good idea. The Canadian is ninth on the PGA Tour in that category, averaging 311.1 yards off the tee this season.

The results have also been piling up for Pendrith, who has top-11 finishes in each of his last four starts, including a win at the Byron Nelson in early May.
