Clyde Edwards-Helaire 2021 Fantasy Football Outlook
Kansas City’s first-round draft pick in 2020 paid immediate dividends last season, as Clyde Edwards-Helaire took over the backfield and established himself as the team’s leading rusher. While his overall numbers were not overwhelming, he still finished with 1,100 yards from scrimmage as a solid RB2 despite missing three of the Chiefs’ final five regular-season games. He also suffered from Kansas City’s spotty offensive line, which was addressed in the offseason following their Super Bowl defeat.
After a year to learn Andy Reid‘s offense, Edwards-Helaire has a bright fantasy outlook for 2021. He’ll benefit from the improved offensive line and should see a few more carries with Damien Williams out of the picture. Edwards-Helaire should also continue to be involved in the passing game with defenses focusing on Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce.
The Chiefs are a pass-first team with Patricks Mahomes, however, which does limit Edwards-Helaire’s fantasy value slightly. He doesn’t get the same volume as other feature backs, especially around the goal line. That said, Reid may lean on him more this season after having a full year and offseason to integrate him into the offense.
As the leading rusher in a high-powered offense, Edwards-Helaire carries considerable upside. He also established a high floor last year, so he’ll still have plenty of fantasy value even if he doesn’t take a substantial step forward in his second season.
Clyde Edwards-Helaire 2021 Fantasy Football Draft Value (PPR)
Now that some of Edwards-Helaire’s rookie hype has died down, it’s possible that he’s actually being undervalued a bit this year. He’s currently going in the third round as the RB16 after D’Andre Swift and Najee Harris, but with a significant leap in his second season he could end up in the RB10-RB12 range. I’d happily take him there as a high-upside RB2 with low-RB1 potential.
