Where Does Mo Salah Rank in Liverpool’s Greatest Ever Players?
Nobody could have predicted that when Jürgen Klopp brought Mo Salah to Anfield in 2017, it would mark the beginning of one of Liverpool’s greatest eras, personified by a club legend who has dazzled the Premier League ever since. Now, nearly 10 years later, I’m asking: where does Mo Salah rank among Liverpool’s greatest-ever players?
Mohamed Salah’s Liverpool Career in Numbers
Salah’s numbers for Liverpool are formidable. As of April 28th 2026, he has 257 goals and 122 assists for Liverpool across all competitions in 440 appearances. He’s directly involved in a goal in almost every game he plays. His debut season at Liverpool still stands as his record, with 44 goals in all competitions, 32 of those coming in the Premier League.
Mo Salah’s Incredible Consistency
Not counting the current season (which is shaping up to be his weakest so far), Salah has never scored fewer than 23 goals across the season in all competitions. This is incredibly consistent: even Ian Rush, Liverpool’s all-time top scorer, occasionally posted single-digit seasons. He also has a habit of scoring goals at critical moments in big games. This is a hallmark of top strikers, and nobody disputes that Salah is a top striker now.
Salah in Liverpool’s Title-winning Seasons
In 2019-20, Liverpool won the Premier League title for the first time in 30 years. Salah was the club’s top scorer with 19 goals in the league and 23 overall. This is at the lower end of his annual goalscoring records for Liverpool, but still represents an excellent season for most strikers. In 2024-25, when Liverpool once again claimed the title, Salah scored 29 goals in the Premier League alone. He was integral to both seasons.
Why is this so important? It’s easy to forget how desperate Liverpool were to win a Premier League title again in the 2000s and 2010s. Steven Gerrard, undisputedly one of the club’s all-time most beloved players, never managed it. Legendary strikes like Robbie Fowler and Michael Owen never achieved it with Liverpool. Brendan Rogers’ ferocious team with the triple-pronged “SSS” attack of Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge, and Raheem Sterling never got over the finish line.
While this shows that Salah was part of a more cohesive team, and working under a more inspirational manager, it also pays tribute to his versatility. In his most prolific seasons, he carried Liverpool with goals. Even in his quieter seasons, he helped make the team significantly better with selfless team play and relentless attacking prowess. The fact that Salah was the talisman and top scorer of the team that took Liverpool back to the Premier League title puts him very high up the list of Liverpool’s greatest-ever players.
But how high? Let’s consider the competition.
A Quick Recap of Liverpool’s Favourite Sons
When we’re talking about Liverpool’s greatest players, there are two names that immediately come to mind.
Kenny Dalglish
King Kenny remains universally adored as the greatest legend Anfield has ever known. Perhaps if he hadn’t rounded out a stunning playing career by leading Liverpool to multiple title-winning seasons as player-manager, this would be a fairer match-up.
No, it wouldn’t. Kenny Dalglish tops out almost every reputable list of Liverpool’s greatest players, and there’s a good reason for that.
Steven Gerrard
This is a closer argument. Steven Gerrard is a club legend, one of the greatest midfielders of all time, and a Merseyside local who achieved every local boy’s dream. The one contention is that he never brought the Premier League title back to Anfield, and nobody will ever forget that slip against Chelsea in 2013-14.
Salah closed out that dream of a title-winning season. Does this accomplishment, amongst many others, put him above Gerrard in the list of Liverpool’s all-time greats?
Ian Rush
The moustachio’d Welshman remains Liverpool’s all-time top goalscorer. He won 5 First Division titles with Liverpool and was a monster to play against in cup finals and big games. If goals and silverware define a striker’s success, can Salah really compete with Rush?
Placing Salah Among the Stars: Verdict
Salah’s career at Liverpool may be coming to a close, but his legacy will remain the subject of debate among pundits and pubgoers for many years. For me? I think Salah has earned a top 5 place among Liverpool’s greatest players: perhaps 4th behind the players I mentioned above. Returning the PL title to Anfield after 30 years can’t be overstated, and his consistency across the decade has been incredible. The fans adore him and even his harshest critics have to recognise what he’s achieved. Though he’s leaving Liverpool soon, Mo Salah will never walk alone.
