The Numbers Behind Vitor Pereira's Nottingham Forest Transformation

When Pereira took over on February 15th, Nottingham Forest were 3 points and one position clear of the relegation zone. The club has had a habit of burning through managers recently, and had already gone through a record 3 managers this season before Pereira was appointed.

Forest proceeded to take 17 points from their final 12 games, including losing only one match in their final 10 games. Even that loss was hugely controversial, with Manchester United incorrectly having a goal ruled in their favour despite a clear handball from Bryan Mbeumo in the buildup. Ultimately, Forest ended the season with 44 points and in 16th place. They will hope to build on their success in the coming season.

Is It Realistic to Expect a Lot From Pereira?

Pereira kept Wolverhampton Wanderers afloat in the Premier League after taking over, but was sacked early in the subsequent season. It may have been his ability to help a struggling team survive that Forest considered when appointing him.

However, Pereira has limited experience in the Premier League, and successfully guiding a team through successive seasons will be a huge challenge. Given that Forest’s owners are somewhat trigger-happy when it comes to managers, Pereira will be well aware of the pressure on him to guide Forest to a higher place next season as well as merely surviving.

This will be combined with higher expectations for the club given their recent European run. While the Europa League and Conference League are often seen as poisoned chalices for up-and-coming teams due to the increased fixture list, Forest have proven that they can go a long way in a major European tournament. The ownership and the fans will be keen to see more of that under Pereira’s leadership.

Nottingham Forest Transfers Under Pereira

Strengthening during the summer will be key to Forest’s prospects next season. However, Pereira has dampened expectations that there will be a major overhaul, expressing confidence in the existing squad and suggesting that retaining many of the team’s existing players will be a priority.

Nonetheless, there’s a strong chance that Elliot Anderson will move on this summer, with the England international midfielder being courted by Manchester City amongst others. Forest will need to replace one of their key talents in this case.

It’s also difficult to say how much input Pereira will have. George Syrianos, Forest’s global technical director, is expected to work closely with owner Evangelos Marinakis on bringing new players in. How well this will work in practice, and how fair it will be to blame Pereira if the summer transfer window doesn’t deliver, remains to be seen.

Conclusion: Nottingham Forest Standing

With a strong transfer window, Forest will have every reason to expect an improved position in the table this season. As is often the case at the club, though, coordination between the owner, the manager, and key staff will be critical.
