Spurs Relegation Odds - Will Tottenham Hotspur Go Down?
Tottenham Hotspur find themselves in the unenviable position of struggling to avoid relegation in the same year their rivals Arsenal may finally clinch a Premier League title. Are Spurs fans destined for the ultimate blow, or can they save their season? Here’s what the run-in looks like at the bottom of the table.
Where Do Spurs Stand in the Table Currently?
With 3 games to go, Spurs sit in 17th and one point above the drop zone. West Ham United are their main rivals at this point, although Spurs have a far superior goal difference, which will give them some comfort. Both teams have difficult fixture lists as the season draws to a close.
Spurs can also take heart in their last rejuvenation under Roberto de Zerbi. End-of-season managerial changes rarely make such a difference as this one has, with Spurs playing some of their best football all season and going unbeaten for their past 3 games.
The Run-In in the Premier League Relegation Battle
The most important factor in deciding who will go down is the fixture list. How does Tottenham’s compare to their rivals?
Tottenham Hotspur
Spurs host Leeds United in their next game. This is a big one, as Leeds are also technically still in the relegation fight. This is followed by a trip to out-of-form Chelsea, who are nonetheless very dangerous, and finally a home game against Everton. The latter have been devastating on the road this year, which will be a concern for Tottenham. It’s not an easy run-in by any means.
West Ham United
West Ham have the unenviable task of hosting leaders Arsenal on Sunday 10th May. Arsenal will be desperate to win every game with Manchester City breathing down their necks, so expect a full-throttle performance here. Next, West Ham travel to Newcastle - this is another difficult match. Newcastle are excellent when on form, and St. James Park is one of the most intimidating venues in the Premier League. Finally, they host Leeds for a blockbuster relegation clash on the last day. They should arguably hope that Leeds will be safe by then, as they may have less to play for.
Nottingham Forest
Nottingham Forest should feel confident that they’re safe, having beaten a miserable Chelsea side to claim 3 points in their most recent game. They now sit 6 points clear of West Ham. However, they also have the distraction of the Europa League semi-finals (and potentially final) to contend with, and nothing should be taken for granted at this stage of the season.
Forest’s finish includes a challenging home tie against Newcastle, followed by a trip to in-form Manchester United at Old Trafford. They host sixth-place Bournemouth on the last day, who will likely be competing for European qualifying spots and should not be underestimated. Forest certainly aren’t safe yet.
The Others
Crystal Palace and Leeds United aren’t safe from relegation yet, although they should fancy their chances being 7 points ahead of West Ham with 3 games to go.
Palace have a tough run-in with Arsenal and Man City both in their fixture list. However, they also have 4 games compared to the other sides’ 3, so they’ll have more opportunities to pick up points in matches that also include Everton and Brentford.
Meanwhile, Leeds have extremely important clashes against Spurs (away) and West Ham (home) remaining. Their other game is against Brighton, and with their fixtures mostly in the lower half of the table, they should be optimistic about avoiding relegation. However, you never know with Leeds!
What Are the Odds on Spurs Being Relegated?
The good news for Spurs fans is that West Ham are the bookies’ heavy favourites to be relegated at this point. The bad news is that Spurs are the second favourite - not a position you ever want to be in. One good result for West Ham and things could change very quickly.
However, the bookmakers tend to be cautious at this time of year, and the odds show a lot of confidence that West Ham will struggle to stay up.
Will Spurs Go Down This Year? Verdict With 3 Games Remaining
Spurs’ position looks much, much better than it did a month ago. De Zerbi has injected energy into the team and reminded the players that they are certainly good enough to stay in the Premier League. It’s just as well - relegation would be a catastrophe for Spurs, not to mention deeply humiliating for its loyal fans. At this point, Spurs fans should feel increasing confidence, but never take anything for granted in the Premier League.
