Liverpool vs. Chelsea Premier League Match Preview
On Saturday, May 9, Liverpool will be looking to get a win back after falling to Manchester United last Sunday, 3-2. They’ll be facing off against a Chelsea squad that’s ninth in the standings and 0-3 in their last three Premier League games, falling to Nottingham Forest, Brighton, and Manchester United. Not only that, but Chelsea has lost seven of its last eight Premier League matches.
Liverpool is a -125 home favorite, while Chelsea is +290 as the road team, per FanDuel Sportsbook.
This will be the second time this season these teams have matched up.
With all of that in mind, let’s preview each side below.
Liverpool Preview
Heading into this match, Liverpool is dealing with some pretty significant injuries. They’re without Huge Ekitike and Alexander Isak for the remainder of the year, and Mo Salah is doubtful to play.
Salah playing would certainly provide a boost, but either way, Liverpool, at home, is a tough squad to take down. This is a team that likes to attack, and, coupled with the home crowd behind them, that would be a massive boon, especially coming off a tough loss that saw some defensive struggles.
As for Liverpool, especially at home, they’ll want to be the ones in control of the pace of the match, but they’ll certainly want to rebound from their 2.3 xGA (expected goals against) performance against Manchester United.
Predicted Lineup: Freddie Woodman, Andrew Robertson, Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Curtis Jones, Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister, Cody Gakpo, Dominik Szoboszlai, Jeremie Frimpong, Florian Wirtz.
Chelsea Preview
As mentioned, it’s been an uphill battle for Chelsea lately. They cannot seem to get a win, going 1-7 in their last eight Premier League matches.
Not only that, but their attack has just not been playing well. Coming out of their match against Nottingham Forest, they’ve scored 54 goals off nearly 70 expected goals.
The injury report for Chelsea is also lengthy, including players like Pedro Neto, Jamie Gittens, Robert Sanchez, and Alejandro Garnacho.
Chelsea does have Joao Pedro, though, who’s tied for third in the Premier League in goals with 15, which certainly helps.
Predicted Lineup: Filip Jorgensen, Marc Cucurella, Trevoh Chalobah, Levi Colwill, Malo Gusto, Moises Caicedo, Romeo Lavia, Pedro Neto, Enzo Fernandez, Cole Palmer, Joao Pedro.
Liverpool vs. Chelsea Prediction
At home, Liverpool has allowed 18 goals compared to an xGA of 19.66. This has been across 32 games where they’re 10-4-3.
However, since March 1, which is their last eight games, Chelsea has scored just six times against 12.79 xG.
Liverpool gets the win at home.
