Enzo Maresca News - Maresca Starts With New Chapter At Manchester City

It’s official. After months of rumors, Enzo Maresca will indeed succeed Pep Guardiola as Manchester City manager.

Maresca has significant shoes to fill after Guardiola brought the club the most successful spell in its history, winning 20 major trophies across 10 seasons.

However, the 46-year-old Italian played a role in some of those triumphs, serving as an assistant coach under Guardiola during City’s 2022-23 treble-winning campaign.

Enzo Maresca May Be the Perfect Successor to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City

It’s never easy to replace one of the greatest managers of all time.

In the Premier League era alone, we’ve seen good managers like David Moyes and Unai Emery fail to follow in the legendary footsteps of Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger.

While succeeding Guardiola will be a similarly tall task, Maresca is the perfect candidate because he’s been at the club before and worked under the Spaniard.

He is familiar with some of the players, and, more importantly, he will be backed by Manchester City’s executive leadership group.

In addition to already having one of the strongest squads in the Premier League, City has long ago established a strong club hierarchy above Maresca that should give him a great chance to prolong the club’s run of success.

Is Maresca Announced?

Enzo Maresca was officially announced as the new Manchester City manager on Monday, June 29.

The Italian spent the previous year and a half at Chelsea before resigning abruptly in January, reportedly with his heart set on the opportunity to succeed Guardiola at Man City.

In his lone full season, Maresca guided the Blues to a fourth-place finish in the Premier League and a UEFA Conference League title. He also helped Chelsea win the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.

On Monday, Chelsea released a club statement of its own, which provided further details around Maresca’s resignation. The statement failed to mention Maresca by name, solely referring to him as the club’s “former head coach.”

Pep Guardiola's Era at Etihad Has Ended

After a decade, Pep Guardiola’s era at the Etihad has officially ended.

During his reign at Man City, the Spanish manager won six Premier League titles, three FA Cups, five League Cups, and the UEFA Champions League. He also added three FA Community Shields, the UEFA Super Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup.

Guardiola’s teams set several Premier League records. In the 2017-18 campaign, Man City became the first EPL team to win the league with 100 points, while also setting the record for goals in a season (106).

City also became the first English club to win four consecutive league titles, successfully defending the crown three times following the club’s 2020-21 triumph.

Conclusion

While Guardiola failed to win the Premier League in his final two seasons, there is still plenty of pressure on Maresca to deliver trophies.

Man City is coming off a campaign in which it won the League Cup and FA Cup, and some fans could consider that a disappointment.

Given Maresca’s experience at Man City and the squad at his disposal, he should make a seamless transition to the role of Man City manager, but he’ll need a quick start to next season to keep the fans on his side.
