The Devastating Financial Impact That Premier League Relegation Would Have on Tottenham

Spurs fans have a very high threshold for football-related pain. Still, the prospect of relegation from the Premier League is the bleakest prospect the club has faced in many, many years. Could it actually happen? And what will the consequences be for a club of Tottenham’s size and stature if they go down?

How Could Spurs Be Relegated?

The way Premier League income streams work, especially for the top teams, means that a club of Spurs’ size should almost be “too big to fail.” But that’s in the same way that Leicester City were “too small to win” the Premier League in 2015-16. The prospect of what happens when a big club loses these income streams, when Tottenham’s entire structure relies on them, hasn’t been tested before in the English top flight.

Here’s how it could go down.

How Much Do Clubs Get For Being in the Premier League?

The main income streams for clubs in the Premier League are commercial opportunities and broadcasting rights. In 2024-25, Spurs received £128m in broadcast payments from the Premier League alone, with a further £70m from European broadcast income. While the EFL broadcast payments Spurs could expect in the Championship total around £50m, that’s only around a quarter of what the club is used to.

Commercial income would suffer less than broadcast income, but could still drop by over £50m from £279m to an estimated £224m. Prestige is big money in top-flight football, and the Premier League is easily the richest football league in the world.

How Much Could Spurs Lose if they’re Relegated?

The Premier League has a massive global audience and is very good at selling itself to overseas markets. However, while English football is popular worldwide, it’s only the top flight that gets this attention. This means that there’s a massive financial impact in relegation.

Championship teams rely heavily on ticket sales, but then, this is already true for Spurs: annual ticket revenue in the PL is around £130m, but they’re able to charge an average of £67 per ticket. This is tough to justify in the Championship, where tickets regularly sell for less than half that amount.

Overall, estimates for how much money Spurs could lose annually range from around £100m to as much as £261m.

Why Relegation Would Be Especially Bad for Tottenham

Fans of “The Other 14” and clubs across the English football pyramid, for whom relegation and promotion are simple facts of life, may react to this with a shrug. That’s fair enough; there’s no question that the top clubs in England are uniquely privileged and prioritised by the media and income structure.

However, adjusting to the new reality is likely to be especially painful for Spurs, given how much the club spends to stay competitive. Here’s where the hits start piling up.

Wage Structure

Spurs are reported to have a clause in player contracts that halves their wage bill upon relegation. This would cut wages from £276m to £138m annually, which is a huge saving.

Of course, that supposes that Tottenham can hold onto their best players. That wage cut also massively reduces their ability to attract new talent. This means that if they make it back to the Premier League, they may do so with a very different-looking squad.

Stadium Costs

Tottenham Hotspur had a net debt of £831m in 2025. Their new stadium accounts for a lot of this, but debt is debt. It needs to be paid off or interest keeps piling up, and Spurs will struggle to keep this balanced without the lucrative Premier League contracts they’re used to.

Sponsorships

Top clubs attract lucrative sponsorships. Spurs’ sponsors include Nike and AIA, and the total value of these contracts is in the tens of millions. However, corporate sponsors are typically well-prepared for any eventuality, and they will have clauses baked in to ensure that if Spurs are relegated, the value of the contract is cut significantly.

Tottenham Hotspur are used to being a rich club. It’s going to be a harsh adjustment involving major structural changes and an entirely new recruitment policy if they go down.

Will Spurs Survive if They’re Relegated? Verdict

Of course, all this supposes that Spurs do get related. There are a few games to go, and we know that this squad has the ability.

Could Tottenham be relegated in a year where Arsenal might also win the league? It would be a seismic moment in North London, and I consider it unlikely. However, if Spurs do go down, what we know is that the impact is going to change the very fabric of the club.
